  2. General impression • Very convincing concept of replacing the Tandems by a modern injector, based on EBIS • The EBIS has seen outstanding development at BNL with respect to high current performance, stable operation and possibility of fast switching between different ion species • We have been convinced that no ECR ion source can serve the same purpose, due to the high charge state, intensities, memory effects; nor the laser ion source due to fast pulsing requirements • Upgrade is really needed because the Tandems are seen to be at the end of their lives. Due to the considerable saving on operation cost, fast realization will be most rewarding for fast return of investments • The solution proposed allows extension of ion species in RHIC up to Uranium to those elements which are not available as negative ions EBIS Review, January 27-28, 2005

  3. EBIS • Analyze and improve ion energy spread and possible transverse-longitudinal coupling • Measure beam parameters including emittance at highest possible peak currents EBIS Review, January 27-28, 2005

  4. LEBT • More studies including 3-D simulations are needed in the presently proposed layout • Look for alternatives (separation of charge states in front of the RFQ) • Avoid long distances between focusing elements • A fast switched 100 kV HV platform looks challenging • Define optimum injection energy into the RFQ with respect to space charge limitation of the LEBT EBIS Review, January 27-28, 2005

  5. RFQ • A PMQ at the end of the RFQ looks inappropriate with respect to fast switching of ions with different q/m. We recommend a modification of the RFQ electrodes to optimize matching with MEBT. EBIS Review, January 27-28, 2005

  6. IH-structure • Compare magnetic focusing with integrated electric focusing. BNL can make a later decision depending on the progress in this field EBIS Review, January 27-28, 2005

  7. Conclusions • We have seen impressive and comprehensive presentations of the project • All items including safety aspect have been well covered • We envisage very high probability of success of this project with little risk EBIS Review, January 27-28, 2005
