  1. Life Skills – Lesson 1 Self Image Learning Targets: What is self image? What are 3 techniques for improving your self image?

  2. Life Skills • Skills to help you feel good about yourself, express yourself, make good decisions and reach your goals.

  3. Self Image • The mental image one has of oneself • Can be positive (+) or negative (–) • Have you ever had an experience that helped boost or hurt your self-image?

  4. Examples • You look like you’re gaining weight. • You always do so well in history, would you help me study? • I do not think you will make the football team. • You don’t need to study for that test because you’re such a nerd. • You’re amazing! How do you do that? • Why should I listen to a fool like you?

  5. Maintaining a Positive Self-Image • Self-Talk • The silent conversation that you have with yourself to explain everyday experiences. • “She didn’t mean what she said. She’s just trying to impress the other students.”

  6. Maintaining a positive self-image cont… • Affirmation • The use of personal statements that highlight our strengths and abilities. • “I know I’m good in math. I’ll be sure to get the answer correct next time.” • “I know I’m a nice person. I’ll make lots of friends in this new school.”

  7. Maintaining a positive self-image cont… • Visualization • Picturing yourself succeeding or comfortable in a new challenging situation that would typically cause you to feel uncomfortable. • Situations include participating in class, giving a speech or making new friends.

  8. Wrap-up Questions • Who is in control of what you do and how you feel about yourself? • Why is it important to maintain a positive image of yourself and others?

  9. Small Groups • 1. Take out 1 sheet of paper for your group. Write your names (first and last) in the upper, right-hand side of the paper. • 2. List the positive self-image technique you have been assigned as a title on your paper. • 3. Write a scenario that shows a negative situation and the use of the positive self-image technique you have been assigned.
