  3. Read for meaning and making connections What is unique about the setting of your book? How does it take enhance or take away from the story? What specific themes does the author emphasize throughout the story? What do you think he or she is trying to get across to the reader? How are the characters changing? What is triggering the changes? What is the mood of the story? How is it created? What is the author’s tone? Choose a part of the book that leads to a new awareness of some aspect of your life that you haven’t thought of before. Discuss with your group members, and write about it. How are you alike and different from the main character? How do the text elements fit together to create the overall mood meaning and theme of your book?   4. Transferring ideas from the book to real life 1. Think of a situation that happened in your book to a character. Decide whether you would have done the same thing, or you would have done something different. Write about what you would have done. 2. Think of one way that someone in your book solved a problem. Write about what you learned about solving the problem that you could use sometime in your life. 3. Select any character from your book. How would that character behave in reading class? How would they act in P.E., or math? 4. What values are presented in your book that we could use in our lives? Are there some values that we shouldn’t use?
