  1. Buckle Up– Day AND Night

  2. In Virginia in 2009: • 756 people died on our roadways • 333 of those people were not wearing their seat belts • 195 of those crashes occurred between 6:00pm and 5:59am (DMV)

  3. In the United States...Every... • 5 seconds a crash occurs • 7 seconds a property damage crash occurs • 10 seconds there is a traffic related injury • 2 minutes there is an alcohol-related injury • 12 minutes someone dies in a traffic crash • 31 minutes an alcohol-related crash fatality occurs • 113 minutes a pedestrian is killed in a crash • 4 days an employee dies in a work-related crash (NETS)

  4. How Can You Stay Safe? BUCKLE UP! Regular seat belt use is the single most effective way to protect people and reduce fatalities in motor vehicle crashes.

  5. The Down-Low on Seatbelts: • Regular seat belt use is the single most effective way to protect people and reduce fatalities in motor vehicle crashes. • Seatbelts are designed to keep you in the vehicle and protect you from being ejected. • If you are in a crash and are thrown from the vehicle, you have a 75% chance of being killed.

  6. But Did You Know… • When worn correctly, seat belts reduce the risk of moderate-to-critical injury by 50%. • 3 out of 4 fatal crashes occur within 25 miles of victims homes • Most crashes causing death or injury occur at speeds below 40 miles per hour.

  7. It’s a No- Brainer, Right? 1 in 5 Virginians still fail to regularly wear their seat belts when driving or riding in a motor vehicle. (State use rate: 82.3%)

  8. Buckle Up, Virginia! Seat belts save lives! And remember….Virginia state law requires that: • Adults in the front seat be properly restrained • Children under the age of 16 in all seating positions be properly restrained • Children under the age of 8 be secured in the appropriate child restraint device (like a booster seat)

  9. Click It Or Ticket Do your part: • Make sure you buckle up EVERY time you get behind the wheel…. Day AND night…even if you’re just driving down the street for a quick errand. • Make sure all your passengers buckle up. Unbuckled adults can severely injure other passengers in an accident. • Spread the word to your friends, family, neighbors and co-workers. The Click it Or Ticket seat belt enforcement mobilization is May 24 – June 6. Law enforcement officers throughout the state will be working together to ticket unrestrained motorists.
