History of the Renaissance • Renaissance is a cultural movement that spanned roughly from the 14th to the 17th century • Renaissance is a French word that means “rebirth.” • Historians consider the Renaissance to be the beginning of modern history. • Renaissance began in northern Italy and then spread through Europe.

  3. The faire • Partly a craft fair, partly historical reenactment and partly performance art. • Costumes are called garb

Fashion • Fashion for the wealthy often meant spending the majority of their money on clothing and it was not uncommon for them to literally be “wearing their wealth” • The more elaborate and tailoring and craftsmanship, the more expensive the clothing was and that also helped establish a reputation for the wealthy. • Sleeves for women were often flared at the end. • Dresses where always long never short • Women’s hair was often very very long

Fashion (guys) • Hats were mandatory in public. • Rich men wore materials such as cotton, satin and velvet, while the poorer classes made do with flannel or other cheap fabrics • Doublet:This piece of clothing is similar to a vest, but with cap sleeves or wings and what not. • Pants where often loose and comfortable, also tightened at the end • They also wore hoses also know as high socks

  9. Costumes Costumes are different from the actual “fashion” of the renaissance because costumes are more of a modern style renaissance.
