Placements: The Issues • Employers • Placements are time consuming/ resource intensive • Difficulty in devising/ managing projects • Participants need training • Internal staff need training or mentoring • Competition between universities • Schemes to deliver placements confusing • Awareness of grants on offer can be low • Finance, HR, Legal & IP issues • Individuals • Tuition fees & student loan interest • Quality placements decreasing • Highly competitive • Accreditation • Not always paid • Confusion over types of grants available • Benefits of placements are not always clearly visible in terms of future career prospects ISSUES • Higher Education • Competition between universities for industry places • Resource intensive to facilitate & manage esp. CROs/SMEs • Assessment can be difficult • Commercially sensitive projects • Time away from teaching and research • Commitment from participants may vary • Ensuring quantity & quality

Recommendations • Engage Industry, Higher Education & Trainees • Offer employers an incentive, such as R&D Tax Credits or a National Insurance Holiday • Devise routes to increase SME & CRO placement provision, quality assurance & training • Offer participants a fixed tuition fee & student loan interest freeze • Showcase benefits & good working practice • New Ways of Working • Coordinate sector wide collaboration • Explore international placements through ERASMUS, EMTRAIN, UKTI & British Council • Consider training & mentoring for all participants • Raise Profile & Reward Activity • Champion & enhance existing programmes & support packages • Recognise & reward good working practice
