Structural engineering = the accumulation of knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to design structures that fulfill 4 main objectives: • Feasibility - can be built and are economical • Serviceability - can perform desired function • Safety - risk of life and economic loss are acceptably low • Aesthetics - most structures are an enduring part of environment [Note the emphasis on design.]

  5. The Structural Design Process • Conception • Loads analysis • Structural analysis • Strength analysis/Detailed design • Implementation/Construction • Evaluation of performance
