  1. Cathedral Primary School Summer 1 2014 Year 2 Science Electricity The children will sort objects that are powered by electricity. They will experiment with batteries, wires and bulbs to find out how electrical circuits work. They will consider how to use electrical items safely. Numeracy Class 2 will look at problems involving all four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. You can find detailed instructions for carrying out these methods on the maths blog: http://www.cathedralprimaryschool.com/maths/calculations/ . The children will also be learning about time and fractions. PE Class 2 will be working on a range of sports skills ready for Sports Week. We will also be learning a dance. Please ensure your child brings the correct and named PE kit every Monday morning for the week ahead. PE will take place on Tuesdays, but they may sometimes require their kit on other days. ................................................................................ RE Jesus as a teacher The children consider what Jesus taught us. They will look at different stories from the Bible, such as the Lost Sheep, and consider the messages within them. They will think about the qualities that made Jesus a good teacher. Literacy This half term we will be reading Mary Poppins in class. Each child will have a weekly guided reading session, and will continue to work on phonics, vocabulary and handwriting. The children’s weekly spelling test will continue so please help them to learn their words at home ready for the test on Tuesdays. Please continue to read regularly at home with your child. We suggest a minimum of 4 times per week. PHSE Differences between people In this topic the children will consider how people vary and how to deal with conflicts between friends. They will think about changes that can happen in friendships. Art / DT Book Illustrators The children will look at the work of illustrators such as Quentin Blake and Anthony Browne and produce their own work that imitates different styles. Homework Class 2 will continue to receive a weekly homework task. This will be given out on a Friday and should be returned by the following Thursday to be marked, History The Great Fire of London The children will learn about the events of the Great Fire of London. There will be opportunities to look at sources of evidence such as Samuel Pepys’ diaries. We will visit the Museum of London for an educational workshop about this topic. Music- This half term the children will be learning about pitch, rhythm and pulse. They will learn how to use handsigns to show musical concepts. ICT- We are zoologists In this topic the children will explore how to organise and classify information using ICT.
