  6. THE MAB PROGRAMME • The MAB Programme develops the basis within the natural and social sciences for the rational and sustainable use and conservation of the resources of the biosphere and for the improvement of the overall relationship between people and their environment. • The MAB Programme & its World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR) include both a comprehensive vision for sustainable development and a powerful implementation tool endorsed and adhered to by Member States. • The WNBR is a major strategic tool for UNESCO to assist Member States, not only in achieving sustainable use and management of biodiversity but also in implementing the SDG’s in a holistic and integrated manner.

  7. THE STRATEGY 2015-2025… Our vision for MAB A world where people are conscious of their common future and interaction with our planet, and act collectively and responsibly to buil thriving societies in harmony with the biosphere

  8. THE STRATEGY 2015-2025… Our mission for the period 2015-2025 is to: • develop and strengthen models of sustainable development in the WNBR; • communicate the experiences and lessons learned (global diffusion and application of these models); • support evaluation and high-quality management, strategies and policies for SD and planning; • help Member States and stakeholders to urgently meet the SDGs through experiences from the WNBR, particularly through exploring and testing policies, technologies and innovations for the sustainable management of biodiversity and natural resources and mitigation and adaptation to CC.

  9. BEFORE 2015… AFTER 2015… Biosphere reserves are ‘Science for Sustainability support sites’ – special places for testing interdisciplinary approaches to understanding and managing changes and interactions between social and ecological systems. Biosphere reserves are areas comprising terrestrial, marine and coastal ecosystems. Each reserve promotes solutions reconciling the conservation of biodiversity with its sustainable use.
