  1. Break out session-Foamer Stella Debord

  2. Topics • Horizontal wells • Capillary Injection • Hydrocarbon rich wells • Soap sticks vs. liquid products • Shut-in time • Green Foamers 2014 Gas Well Deliquification Workshop Denver, Colorado

  3. 1. Horizontal wells • There are some success case histories in Canada by Nalco. • For continuous chemical injection, foamers can be applied either back of annulus or via capillary. • The surface area of tubing and casing is large. Is there any concern on pumping chemicals back of annulus (losing foamers by coating pipes)? 2014 Gas Well Deliquification Workshop Denver, Colorado

  4. 2. Capillary Injection • Capillary is installed down to heel/kick off. It is hard to install capillary down to perf level. • Capillary can be installed outside of tubing to reach end of tubing. • For foamer applications, installing capillary to the end of tubing is desirable (if possible). However, other chemicals may not require for the capillary to be end of tubing. You need to know where problem occurs and apply chemicals upstream of problems. • When a well is shut in, make sure to flush the capillary with DI water to protect the capillary. 2014 Gas Well Deliquification Workshop Denver, Colorado

  5. 3. Hydrocarbon rich wells • Hydrocarbon rich liquids are hard to foam and often the foam is not stable enough to be unloaded. This results in high dosage to foam and lift liquids from a well and foamer application becomes less economic compared to water based foamer applications. • How field dosage is determined? First, the dosage is based on the liquid in tubing and casing. If the well is flowing, the the dosage is based on liquid production. 2014 Gas Well Deliquification Workshop Denver, Colorado

  6. 4. Soap sticks vs. liquid products • One operator, BP, asked which to prefer? This led discussion on advantages of each technologies. • What are advantages of soap sticks? Easy to handle and easy to apply. • Soap sticks come in different chemistries. It is important to test different soap sticks and identify best product to treat your well. 2014 Gas Well Deliquification Workshop Denver, Colorado

  7. 5. Shut-in time • How long is enough and how do we know when to open the well? • Typically, the well is shut in 24-48 hours to build pressure(Fenfen). • Or shut the well in until the bottom hole pressure reaches its maximum(Doug Smith, Baker). 2014 Gas Well Deliquification Workshop Denver, Colorado

  8. 6. Green Products • Green/environmentally friendly foamers • The only comment from this topic was if flourosilcone or silcone surfactants are not used because of environmental concern. The main reasons why they are used widely are (1) cost of those surfactants are a lot higher than surfactants for water based foamers (2) downstream, refinery, wants to minimize intake of silcone in the crude oils as possible. 2014 Gas Well Deliquification Workshop Denver, Colorado
