K12, Inc Began in 1999 when a father went looking for math support services to help his daughter… From that small start has grown a company that: • Serves Virtual Academes in over 30 states • 500,000 students • 85 countries • 6 continents • Variety of models: Virtual Academies, Hybrid Schools, Flex Academies, Passport Schools Anytime….Anywhere…To Anyone

  6. Georgia Cyber Academy • Originally Chartered as a program of Odyssey School in July 2007 by the SBOE • Accredited by AdvancedED • Currently funded at approximately $4,300 per student…less than 50% of the state average

Model Mechanics • All GCA students work from home with a parent or other adult serving as a “Learning Coach” or “Mentor”, depending on the grade level, working with and supporting the student during the day. • Each student works with multiple GCA teachers (homeroom and subject-specific). There are nearly 400 state certified and highly-qualified teachers located across Georgia. • GCA provides a desktop computer for lower grades or a laptop for high school students in addition to reimbursement for dial-up internet access to low-income students.

School Profile • Majority low-income (~60% - GCA is a Title I School) • ~40% minority • Less than 30% of students enroll in GCA from homeschooling • For the vast majority of GCA students enrolling from a public or private school, parents have made the decision to uproot their schedule and personal lives to pursue an alternative to the conventional brick and mortar experience over the skepticism of family, friends, and/or neighbors

  16. College Credit Now • CCN is an umbrella term for all programs that permit students to earn college credit while they are still in high school. These programs include: • Dual Enrollment/Move On When Ready* • Joint Enrollment* • Residential Programs* • Early College • Articulated Credit

College Credit Now (CCN) provides opportunities for Georgia high school students to take college-level courses and earn concurrent credit toward a high school diploma and a college degree. • Participation in College Credit Now eases the transition from high school to college, provides students an early start on their college careers, and offers meaningful and challenging academic experiences to qualified students. • College Credit Now can help increase the college and career readiness of high school graduates.

  18. Student Participation Students can participate at any of Georgia’s public or private colleges. This includes any of the University System of Georgia (USG) colleges as well as the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG)colleges throughout the state.

Student Participation • Any eligible 9ththrough12th grade high school student may enroll full-time or part-time in approved credit-bearing college-level courses approved by the State Board of Education*. • Courses may be taken before, during or after regular school hours, on the college campus, or on-line during the regular school calendar year. • Approved courses must count toward state and/or local high school graduation requirements.

Dual Enrollment / MOWR Students take courses from a college while still enrolled as a high school student and receive credit at both the high school and the college DE can be part-time or full-time. The student may still take courses through GCA. MOWR is exclusively full time and the student does not take any courses through GCA.

  21. Residential Programs There are two residential programs for DE students in Georgia. These are full time DE programs where the students live on campus at the college. These programs are located at: • Middle Georgia College (GAAMES) • University of West Georgia (AAG)

  22. Joint Enrollment High school students take courses at a postsecondary institution while still enrolled as a high school student and receive college credit only at the postsecondary institution.
