  4. Battle of Thermopylae • Darius dies • Xerxes brings many more troops(makes bridge out of boats) • Spartans help (300) • Spartans defend pass • Traitor shows Persians secret pass around mtns. • All Spartans die

  5. Battle of Salamis • Athens retreated to Salamis (Island) • Persians destroyed Athens • Greeks tricked Persians into bringing large ships into narrow channel • Smaller Greek ships defeated Persians

  6. Importance of Persian Wars (499–449 B.C. [B.C.E.]) • Persian wars united Athens and Sparta against the Persian Empire. • Athenian victories over the Persians at Marathon and Salamis left Greeks in control of the Aegean Sea. • Athens preserved its independence and continued innovations in government and culture.
