  4. Methods of Persuasion • When trying to persuade or convince someone of a subject there are many ways to do so: • Appeal to emotion through faithand pity • Social Proof • Authority • Appeal to tradition

  5. Appeal to Emotion • Goal: You want to guide me to your side by presenting me with words that trigger an emotional response. • Appeal to pity: Helping hungry kids commercial • Appeal to faith: Manifest Destiny

  6. Abolitionists? • What does the word mean? • People who wanted to end slavery, usually religious movements at this time. When did they come on to the scene? - They were always around, but picked up speed as the issue of power and time came into play.

  7. 2 examples… • Underground railroad • “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”

  8. Unique Aspect of this time period • Often times religious or everyday songs had double meanings. Such as “Follow the drinking Gourd” which said to follow the “Big Dipper” to escape North.

  9. Assignment • Take either the Underground Railroad or “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” and write a paragraph using the method of persuasion we went over today.
