  3. Monitor The computers monitor is an essential piece of equipment needed on a desktop computer, it displays all of the information on the screen, millions of pixels displays the monitors graphics, the resolution and screen sixe varies on the computer you own. If you have a portable computer (laptop) the screen is inbuilt so buying a monitor isn't necessary, the only down side would be if you wanted a bigger screen you would have to buy a whole need laptop unlike a desktop where you can change everything separately making it more of a practical computer to use in digital graphics as you can change the graphics card, monitor and other hardware when it needs to be updated. The design has changed a lot over the years they have gone from a quite big and bulky design to a slim and smaller one, this is due to the fact technology has greatly improved, you can buy touch screen computer monitors, this would greatly improve the speed in what task could be carried out in, you wouldn’t need a keyboard or mouse you could perform the computer with your hand. If you was using a touch screen monitor in digital graphics, it would be a handy piece of equipment, you wouldn’t need to buy extra tools like the drawing tablet as it would be included in the screen and you could just use your hand or a stylus if one was compatible. The only down side to this would be in order to input information you would have to use your hand, so the screen would have smudge marks all over it and also if you was to break the screen it would be useless whereas if you have a slandered monitor you would have fewer risk of breaking it as you have little contact with it and if an accident was to occur they are cheap to replace. http://www.ssc.education.ed.ac.uk/courses/vi&multi/vnov06d.html http://www.gemsnfx.com/products/audio-visual-equipment/computer-monitorshttp://www.trinituner.com/v3/forums/viewtopic.php?t=217426 Jeff Dyer BTEC ICT Unit 30 Task 1

  4. Keyboard and Mouse Another essential equipment used on any computer. They keyboard can do many tasks, you can type, use shortcuts and do coding. The keyboard can be used as a quick way of selecting different tools when you are editing an image, if you get familiar with a keyboard and all the shortcuts it can be a useful thing to have, it makes performing tasks faster than using a mouse and you can also create your own shortcuts to suit you. The mouse is pretty much the main equipment used it performs every task on the computer, this is what I will be pretty much always using to edit and draw new objects within this task, you can get other equipment like drawing tablets but I will mostly be using a mouse. All the tools used in photo editing can be controlled with the mouse, you can draw shapes, cut bit out of an image and also use the sliders to edit the brightness, contrasts and other enhancement tools that are used in digital graphics. There are quite a lot of variety of keyboard and mouse’s you can buy suit for different activities like gaming. You can buy a drawing tablet that acts like a mouse, using this equipment you can easily draw detailed images using your hand and a stylus, this is for more professional work but is a handy piece of equipment to use if you are interested in editing and drawing images. Here is an example of a custom keyboard, it has the same function as a normal keyboard but has added features to improve speed of performing tasks, it has extra shortcut buttons and has a slightly different shape for more comfort and easier use. The keyboard and mouse is essential for every computer, without them you would not be able to function a computer, unless you have a high quality touch screen computer, in that case its all built into the machine and has no need for a mouse or keyboard. http://www.extremepc.co.nz/images/KeyboardMouse.jpg Jeff Dyer BTEC ICT Unit 30 Task 1

  5. Drawing Tablet A drawing tablet is a input device that enables users to hand draw. Drawing tablets are used more for professional use like computer image designers but doesn’t have to be, they can be used by anyone and can but them in most computing shops. They are used to create high quality images on a computer, you draw on the tablet and your image is presented on the screen and depending on the tablet it is displayed on the screen, only the tablets with a LED screen can be used to draw on the screen, the most common tablets display the image on the monitor. This piece of equipment is used to draw images with a stylus for more accurate drawing that a mouse can not do. They can also used to trace a piece of paper which is taped or otherwise secured to the surface, this is called digitizing. Some tablets are intended as a general replacement for the mouse as the primary and navigation device for desktop computers. They are quite easy to use, you draw objects on the tablet with the stylus and it will e displayed on the monitor, there isn't a lot of buttons so it is quite simple and easy to use. http://ansintask.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/54664-large.jpg Jeff Dyer BTEC ICT Unit 30 Task 1

  6. Hard Drive (HDD) The hard drive is the memory used to store documents, images, music and videos on a computer, every computer has a build in memory system you can also buy external hard drive if you require more space than the build in HDD provides. It’s the dominant storage device since the early 60’s, they comes in many sizes to the smallest 1GB (1000MB) to the highest 1TB (1000GB) and also comes in different shapes and models, you can get a USB device (flash drive) which imports in the USB slots on a computer, this is the most common use of portable storage as its small and easy to carry around, they range from 1GB to 30GB if you want any bigger space you would have to buy a bulky one. You would still be able to travel around with this device but you would have to carry a bag. It fits into digital graphics as this is how people will store their work they have created and is used by everyone without a hard drive people would not be able to save their work. A hard drive is made up of loads of wires, it consists of one or more ridged rotating disk coated with magnetic material, these read and write data from magnetic leads on a small actuator arms. http://www.gadgetreview.com/2011/06/hp-personal-media-br388aa-1tb-portable-hard-drive-85-free-shipping.html http://www.thecameracentre.net/shop/sandisk-cruzer-blade-4gb-usb-flash-drive-223.html http://pcwizkid.co.uk/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=131_70_72 Jeff Dyer BTEC ICT Unit 30 Task 1

  7. Digital Camera’s A digital camera takes still images, they can also record videos on an electronic image sensor. Most cameras are now digital, digital cameras can also be found in other devices like PDA’s and mobile phones. Digital and film cameras share an optical system, using a lens with a variable diaphragm to focus onto an image pickup device. There are many different types od models of camera with different settings and applications, some you can change the exposure, aperture, focus, light and white balance, this is good for digital design as the person can alter the setting on the camera to take an image with the correct effects, this is probably one of the most common piece of equipment someone would use in digital graphic as most take their own photos for their work and then edit them on some editing software. Most photos taken with a digital camera with be a JPEG, this is the standard file type for an image and works on pretty much any device, the average battery life or a digital camera normally last up to 500-100 pictures and use two AA batteries that can be standard or rechargeable for the best use. Cameras come in different megapixels, they rang from 3 to 12 megapixels. Megapixels in the camera determine how good quality the picture will be the more pixels in a camera the higher quality the images will be, the common pixels in a camera is about 8, mobile phones have the same, the higher the pixels then better the images will turn out. http://www.itechnews.net/2007/05/18/canon-powershot-s5-is-digital-camera/ http://www.english-online.at/news-articles/technology/digital-camera-how-it-changed-photography.htm Jeff Dyer BTEC ICT Unit 30 Task 1

  8. Scanners & Printers A scanner is a device that optically scans images, printed text, handwriting, objects and converts it into a digital image. A document is placed on a glass window for scanning and a senor copies the document and prints a exact replica, its used mostly in offices and the most common scanner is a desktop scanner (flatbed), you can also get hand help scanners where the device is moved by hand. Scanners may be used in digital graphics for copying images they have taken which isn't saved on the computer or its from a magazine or other book, scanners are a fast easy way to copy documents and images quickly and may have a great use for someone who was doing digital graphics as it is faster than printing , they can scan up to 20 to 150 pages per minute. A printer is a peripheral device which produces a representation of an electronic document on paper. There are different types of printers , local peripheral printers are connected to directly to a nearby personal computer, network printers have a built in Wi-Fi this means many computers can be connected and use this printer and not have to be connected directly to it.. Other printers can print documents directly from a memory card or from a digital camera, these printers are called multifunction printers and I think these printers would be the best use for digital graphics as you can easily print out documents and images without having to use a computer which would save time and will make tasks much faster in performing. http://icttrends.com/preparation/fundamentals/input-unit-keyboard-mouse-scanner/http://cdn-static.cnet.co.uk/i/c/blg/cat/printers/lj1018.JPG Jeff Dyer BTEC ICT Unit 30 Task 1

  9. Software Jeff Dyer BTEC ICT Unit 30 Task 1

  10. Adobe Photoshop Adobe Photoshop is the most common image editing software, its also a really high quality professional software to use if you want to edit images, there are so many different variety of tools you can use, as it is quite complex to use beginners would struggle to use some of the more advance editing techniques and tools that’s are available with this software. Its quite an expansive piece of software, its over £500 but its really worth it as it has many things to offer and as its one of the best in the world you would expect it to be. There are two types you can buy, the standard version and extended, there isn't a lot of difference between them apart from the extended version lets you create 3D images so is more for a professional use . This is probably then most used software in digital graphics as it’s the most professional editing software you can get, they would use it to edit their images and create their work, you can do pretty much anything on Photoshop that’s why it is widely used by everyone. In digital graphics people would use this software on every piece of their work, every photo they take can be enhanced and edited, you can create layers to make posters for advertisement purposes. The file format Photoshop documents are saved in is PSD, this stands for ‘Photoshop Document’. A PSD file stores an image with support for most imaging options available in Photoshop these options are layers with masks, colour spaces, CMYK mode (used for commercial printing), transparency, ICC profiles, alpha channels and spot colours, clipping paths and duotone settings. This file format is in contrast to many others like JPG or GIF the only difference is a PSD file gives the maximum height and width to 300,000 pixels and the length limit is four Exabytes. http://www.wildwestseo.com/free-photoshop-stuff/ Jeff Dyer BTEC ICT Unit 30 Task 1

  11. Paint Paint is a basic software where you can draw images, this wont be a person choice of software to use in digital graphics at a professional level but beginners might start with paint to get the basic hand of drawing images. On paint you can really edit anything as there are only basic tools available like a pen, brush and shapes . The software is designed for a younger audience as a starter to get the hang of designing on a computer. The document saves as a JPEG which is the most standard image file format and cab be accessed on pretty much everything now, like phones and tablets. In schools this would be the first bit of software they would introduce to children as it is easy to pick up and wont be to complicated to make basic images on. Paint is made by Microsoft and is available on any Microsoft computer so no purchase is required to use this software. The paint available on windows 7 is the most advanced paint they have created as they have a wider range of ‘artists’ brushes they do this with the Ribbon GUI to give it a more realistic feel. Anything pre-windows the paint is pretty basic with just a couple of tools and brushes. Paint is often used to make pixel art, pixel art is a for of digital art , old games normal used pixel art and also many mobile games are pixel art. This is what pixel art looks like, as you can see the pixels are visible as the picture is made with little block shapes, most basic games are made with this technique as it is simple and doesn’t require a lot of graphics to play at fast speed. http://www.komodomedia.com/blog/2008/10/design-inspiration-from-cabel/ http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ficheiro:Logo_Paint-pt.PNG Jeff Dyer BTEC ICT Unit 30 Task 1

  12. CorelDraw CorelDraw is a vector graphics editor which is a program that allows users to create and edit vector graphics images , many files include EPS, PDF, WMF, SVG and VML. This software was developed and marketed by Corel Corporation, its also the name of Corel's graphics suite. This is part of a bundle package other programs include CorelDraw which is a bitmap image editor, Corel PhotoPaint and other graphics related programs. The price of the whole package is about £267 so it quite a lot cheaper than Photoshop and you also get a lot of other programs included. Vector Graphics use geometrical primitives such as point ,lines, curves, shapes and polygons. They would use this software to create clear images, they may use it to create logo or labels for products or for their company http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vector_graphics http://www.corel.com/corel/product/index.jsp?pid=prod4260069&cid=catalog20038&segid=5700006&storeKey=us&languageCode=en Jeff Dyer BTEC ICT Unit 30 Task 1

  13. GIMP Gimp is another editing software like Photoshop, it is a free software which offers some good editing tools that are available on Photoshop. As it is free it is a much more practical piece of software to use fort beginners who don’t want to spend over £500 on the top of the range editing software. This software has some basic and advanced tools for editing photos , animations can also be made using this software. This software wouldn't really be used by professionals as there are better software available but would be good for people who are just starting in digital graphics, as it is free it wont coast them anything so learning from Gimp would be ideal. Gimp is compatible with most operating systems like Windows, Mac and Linux, gimp is mainly used for image retouching and editing, free-form drawing, resizing, cropping, photo montages and converting between different image formats. Animated files created on this software are saved in a Gif format. This software is one of the leading high-end free software available for people on the web. http://www.stefanoforenza.com/hands-off-the-gimp/http://gimp.modsmedia.com/modsmediagimp2.html Jeff Dyer BTEC ICT Unit 30 Task 1

  14. File Formats Jeff Dyer BTEC ICT Unit 30 Task 1

  15. RAW Raw images files are not yet processed images, they are intended to capture as closely as possible (the best specific performance the device can do). Raw files contain the full resolution (12 or 14-bit), they are the files directly used in digital photography, they are also massive in scale and use lots of pixels to display the highest quality image. The only problem with having a high quality image is the size, the size of a raw image would be quite big, 2-6 times bigger than a JPEG. This file format is good for billboards and other large advertisement needs, but normally the image will be compressed to a JPEG to reduce size, doing this will also reduce the quality. JPEG JPEG’s are the most common file format for an image, they are normally compressed from a raw file to reduce the size, the image also reduces the quality when it has been compressed. The reason they are compressed is so that they can be used for more purposes, as the size is smaller they can be used on websites and download would be faster. If the Raw image was to be put on a website the time to load the page would be increase as it is a much larger file type than a JPEG, so using a JPEG makes more sense. A JPEG image file format gives the best quality image at a low size, this is the reason it is used so much, people can easily view and download images at a fast speed, also is compatible with most devices like mobile phones, tablets and cameras. http://www.iconhot.com/icon/file-icons-vs-2/jpg-2.html http://www.veryicon.com/icons/file-type/katie-melua-pictures-preview/raw.html Jeff Dyer BTEC ICT Unit 30 Task 1

  16. PNG PNG files where create to replace GIF as an image-file format not requiring a patent licence. PNG file are low resolution images, this means they will load faster but still but don’t have the best quality so most files would be small and used for icons . PNG files also have a transparent background, this would be used for logos on a webpage, they would be able to fit the logo on the page to match the background colour. GIF Gif files are also low resolution , used on websites for logos, its similar to a PNG file but higher quality, this file also supports a transparent background , you would use a gif for a simple logo, icon or symbol. Gif file are not the best for photos as it has colour limitations , so the image wont look very good quality. Gifs are mainly used for animation this file type allows you to create moving pictures, you mainly see examples of gif files on a banner on a webpage, most are animated and have loads of different pictures sliding across to advertise companies. BMP BMP files also know as a bitmap file is a raster graphics image file format. This file format is capable of storing 2D digital images of arbitrary width, height and resolution. Most BMP files are relatively large due to the lack of any compression. The file loses quality when it is scaled, they have relatively low resolution and are normally added to the internet as a GIF or JPEG file as they are a smaller file type so it wont take along time to load the page . Files saved in paint are normally a BMP file but are then either compressed to a JPEG or GIF as a BMP file is too large to be put onto the internet. Jeff Dyer BTEC ICT Unit 30 Task 1

  17. Raster and Vector The difference between a raster and a vector image is this, a raster image is composed of pixels, while vector images are composed of paths . Typical raster file formats are JPEG and GIF, these file formats is in an array of pixels of various colours , which make up the image. Typical vector file formats are EPS and BMP files, these file are composed of paths and lines that are either straight or curved. The data file for a vector image contains a pint where the path starts and end, how much the line curve and the colours that either border or fill the paths. As vector images are not made of pixels the image can be scaled at a large size without losing it quality unlike raster files that are made up of pixels if this file was to be made bigger it would lose it quality and the pixels will start to show making it look blocky. http://www.edc.uri.edu/criticallands/raster.html Jeff Dyer BTEC ICT Unit 30 Task 1
