First about you… • On the index card please write the following… • name • class time • address • phone • other courses currently taking • current employment • work schedule • things I should know to better help the you during the semester • what brought you to this course • what you hope to get out of the course

  3. Now about me… • Mike McGuire • Married with a three-year-old son named Aidan • Grew up down the street in Mt. Greenwood but live in the western suburbs currently • M.A. in Rhetoric and Composition from NEIU • B.A. from UIC, double major in English and psychology • Third year at MVCC • Taught 2 years prior to MVCC at Kishwaukee College • Before that another 2 years part-time at Waubonsee Community College • Worked in the IT/management consulting industry during that time in knowledge management, communications, and corporate education • Taught English as a foreign language in Japan • As a teacher, I hold my students to high standards of excellence, but I will do all that I can to help them succeed (because I know they can)

  5. Today’s Objectives • To get oriented to the course, the syllabus, requirements, expectations, and so forth. • To break/melt the ice with one another • To form and begin working in collaborative groups

  6. Break the Ice • Form groups of three • Find one item you are carrying that is significant to you and share it with your group; explain the significance • Find one thing that everyone in your group has in common

  7. In the Spot Light • Introduce a person in your group and share something you learned about him/her • Share what everyone in your group has in common

  8. Working as a Team • Together come up with 5 to 8 questions you have about this course • Now, with the syllabus, try to find the answers to the questions you came up with • Let’s talk about the questions you couldn’t find answers to…

  9. What to expect next class… • a photo-op(so have a good hair day :-) • pre-assessment so I can learn more about you • discussion of process • the first major assignment

  10. Your Homework • Read/study syllabus • Complete the brief assignment:“Introduction by Way of Word and Image” • Read Ways of Reading 1 – 15
