  1. Inventory for SPS BCT’s • Ring DC BCTs (LSS1, LSS3, LSS4) • Fast Transfer-line BCTs: • TT2/TT10 (LIU-PS) • TT40 (+CNGS)/TI8 (beam 2 to LHC) • TT60/TI2 (beam 1 to LHC) • (CNGS TT41) • Fast RING BCTs: • LSS3 (31450)

  2. Ring DC BCT’s • Commercial (Bergoz) DCCTs acquired in BA1, BA3,BA4 • Reliability issue (radiation-levels LSS1) • Expensive maintenance contract. • BA3 and BA4 will be kept alive as long as needed. • Within NA61 ions project, two new in-house DCCT’s and one FBCT will be installed in LSS5 (51896) • Human protection and beam current measurements • Installation and first beam tests foreseen for mid 2012. • Acquisition for all beam types foreseen • Review specifications with SPS-LIU, e.g. 2.7E11 per bunch • Implementation of SPS MPS (B. Todd) ? • Lessons learned from LHC will be implemented • Project approved and likely no further funding needed.

  3. BCTFR 31450 issues • Bandwidth limited (acquisition at 40MHz) Tail in adjacent buckets (->75nsec), typically ~5-15% observed. Very long cables, could be improved by moving to LSS4 (space ?) Courtesy L. Jensen

  4. BCTFR 31450 issues Beam position and frequency dependency Courtesy L. Jensen In high bandwidth ~1%/mm has been observed in LHC on 50ns bunched, while in the SPS only ~0.1%/mm (75nsec beam). Parasitic MD on 50ns and 25ns and different bunch lengths to be done. Possible to implement turn by turn measurements (fast injection losses) Now ‘snap-shot’ every 40ms.

  5. BCTFR 31450 outlook • Measure position dependency with 25 and 50ns beams in SPS, and different bunch lengths. Spring 2011. • Understand SPS bandwidth limitations. Spring 2011. • Estimate dynamic range and resolution with 2.7E11 charges per bunch. Spring 2011. • Improve and test LHC FBCT beam position and bunch length dependencies. Mid 2011. • Decisions according to results and requirements. Autumn 2011. Also for 8* BCTFI.

  6. BCTFR 31450 outlook • Position dependency.Develop and install new BCT. 100 kCHF, 6MM LS1 2014 • Bandwidth limitation. Move to LSS4 50 kCHF1MM LS1 2014 • Turn by turn measurements. Software modifications 1 MM (low-level and application) During 2011

  7. Conclusions • Development of new DCCT for NA61 started, will comply to LIU specifications. No extra funding needed. • FBCT issues still to be understood. Decisions on upgrades to be taken later this year, depending on measured performance and client (LIU) specifications. • Turn by turn measurements on FBCTR can fairly easily be obtained.
