  3. Our mission Zero Waste Scotland is helping Scotland to become more efficient in its use of resources. As a facilitator and enabler of change, we help to reduce waste, increase energy efficiency and use water more responsibly - all as part of a journey towards a low-carbon, sustainable economy.

Our policycontext • Our work supports the delivery of Scottish Government policy , including: • the Climate Change (Scotland) Act (2009), • the Zero Waste Plan (2010), • the Waste (Scotland) Regulations (2012) • the Recyclate action plan (2012) • Low Carbon Scotland (2013), • Safeguarding Scotland’s Resources (2013) • forthcoming national litter strategy.

  6. Key programme priorities • Transforming attitudes to food waste; • Harnessing the value of recycling; • Supporting circular economy businesses; • Reducing the impacts of litter; • Implementing resource efficiency savings; and • Accelerating development of low carbon heat.

  7. Transforming attitudes to food waste Why? 2.1 m tonnes/year. £1bn lost to households. Methane from landfill. What do we want to achieve? 70% of HHs with recycling. 12% reduction. How will we do it? • Complete £20m collections investment • Communications support • Consumer food waste reduction

  8. Harnessing the value of recycling Why? £200m p.a. leakage to the economy. Waste Regs. What do we want to achieve? Growing industry by £20m p.a. How will we do it? • LA and RMI support • Task Force • Collaborative procurement • Research and communications support • Resource Commitment • Community action

  9. Supporting circular economy business opportunities Why? Potential for 5,000 jobs What we hope to achieve? Increased CE business opportunities How will we do that? • Evidence and engagement • Reprocessing support • Manufacturing and remanufacturing innovation • Re-use and repair hubs and REVOLVE • Research and communications support • Sustainable procurement

  10. Reducing the impacts of litter Why? 250 million items visibly littered. 61,000 incidents of flytipping. Direct and indirect costs. What do we want to achieve? Long term behaviour change, collective action How will we do it? • Litter strategy and campaign • ROTG • Carrier bag regs • Community support • Data and reporting • Strategic engagement and collective action

  11. Implementing resource efficiency savings Why? £2.9bn p.a. savings opportunity. What do we want to achieve? 30,000 businesses supported, 3,000 taking action. How will we do it? • Responsive A&S service • RE Pledge • Strategic programmes • Public sector • Buildings in-use • Major events

  12. Accelerating development of low carbon heat Why? Half of all energy used for heating or cooling. What do we want to achieve? Support 11% renewable heat target for 2020 How will we do it? • Heat Network Partnership • Local and national heat maps • Technical advice and feasibility • Biofuels
