  1. Skopos theory and translation • Is there a purpose in a text?

  2. Skopos theory and translation • Equivalence: • 1. TT has a similar impact to the ST • 2. Translation is a valid representation of the original.

  3. Skopos theory - Vermeer • Translate/interpret/speak/write in a way that enables your text/translation to function in the situation in which it is used and with the people who want to use it and precisely in the way they want it to function. (Vermeer in Nord)

  4. Skopos theory - Vermeer • Intratextual coherence – the translation is coherent within the receiver’s situation • Intertextual coherence – the relationship of the ST to the TT • ST >> text type, genre << TT functionally equivalent text type and genre

  5. Functionalism - Nord • The translation commission should provide: text function, target reader characteristics, time and place of reception, the medium, ST information • ST analysis : topic, cohesion, communicative context, text structure, terminology, register. • TT solutions: decide intended function, adapt elements of ST, identify TT style

  6. Functionalism Literary Translation - Nord • In chapter 5 I have tried to present some provocative functionalist ideas on literary translation. The examples presented there hopefully show that a considerable numbers of problems in literary translation can be approached from a functionalist standpoint without jeopardizing the ‘originality’ of the source text. • To make the originality of the source show through in the target text is, of course, a possible translation purpose (p. 122)

  7. Does functionalism relate to the text type?

  8. Text type and skopos • Literary texts • Religious texts • http://www.usc.edu/dept/MSA/quran/
