  1. Team Worker Creative Thinker Effective Participator Independent Enquirer Reflective Learner Self Manager Real life cross/curricular links? Where are we in our journey? Which ones are you using? PLT Skills LESSON OBJECTIVES Always aim high! We are learning to: • Finding connections between different words. (Which PLT skills?) • Accurately calculate with ratios when only one part of the information is known. (Grade C) AUTHOR www.mistrymaths.co.uk

  2. Which ones are you using? BRAIN IN GEAR Team Worker Creative Thinker Effective Participator Independent Enquirer Reflective Learner Self Manager PLT Skills EXAMPLE DITDIONA can be rearranged to make ADDITION TASK Work out the following Mathematical anagrams: Miles Input Root EXTENSION As a creative thinker, develop your own Mathematical anagrams as above.

  3. Which ones are you using? Team Worker Creative Thinker Effective Participator Independent Enquirer Reflective Learner Self Manager STARTER PLT Skills TASK 1 2 ÷ Write as a single power: 3 ÷ 3 Write as a single power: 9 x 9 Find: 10% of £92 1) 2) 4) 3) 5 4 -2 -4 5 7 Write 0.1 as a percentage Find 80% of 20km 5) 6) 7) of £32 2 2 2 2t + 10t = 4t + 12t = 2t + 22t EXTENSION 3 8 Expand and simplify: 4t(t + 3) – 2t(t – 5) -

  4. Which ones are you using? Team Worker Creative Thinker Effective Participator Independent Enquirer Reflective Learner Self Manager PLT Skills CALCULATING WITH RATIO EXAMPLES (a) A fruit drink is made by mixing lemon squash with water in the ratio 4:5. How much water needs to be added to 28cl of lemon squash to make the drink? SQUASH : WATER 4 : 5 x 7 x 7 : 35cl ? 28cl Therefore, 35cl of water needs to be added to make the drink. (b) To make Squirrel Grey paint, you need to mix Snow White and Beetle Black together in a ratio of 3:2. How much Snow White will you need if you’re using 18 litres of Beetle Black? WHITE : BLACK 3 : 2 x 9 x 9 : 27litres 18litres ? Therefore, 27litres of Snow White needs to be mixed to make Squirrel Grey.

  5. Which ones are you using? Team Worker Creative Thinker Effective Participator Independent Enquirer Reflective Learner Self Manager PLT Skills CALCULATING WITH RATIO EXTENSION (GRADE C) TASK 1 (GRADE C) 1) The ratio of male to female spectators at ice hockey games is 4 : 5. At the Steelers’ last match, 4500 men watched the match. What was the total attendance at the game? 2) A teacher always arranged the content of each of his lessons to Year 10 as ‘teaching’ and ‘practising learnt skills’ in the ratio 2 : 3. a) If a lesson lasted 35 minutes, how much teaching would he do? b) If he decided to teach for 30 minutes, how long would the lesson be? 3) A ‘good’ children’s book is supposed to have pictures and text in the ratio 17 : 8. In a book I have just looked at, the pictures occupy 23 pages. a) Approximately how many pages of text should this book have to be deemed a ‘good’ children’s book? b) What percentage of a ‘good’ children’s book will be text? 1) In a room, the ratio of men to women is 4:1. If there are 20 men, how many women are there? 2) In a box, the ratio of nails to screws is 5:3. If there are 15 nails, how many screws are there? 3) An alloy consists of copper, zinc and tin in the ratios 1:3:4. If there is 10g of copper in the alloy, find the weights of zinc and tin. 4) In a shop the ratio of oranges to apples is 2:5. If there are 60 apples, how many oranges are there? 5) In a train the ratio of adults to children is 7:2. If there are 126 adults, how many children are there?

  6. Which ones are you using? Team Worker Creative Thinker Effective Participator Independent Enquirer Reflective Learner Self Manager PLT Skills RATIO OF AMOUNTS MINI-PLENARY The ratio of female to male members of a tennis club is 3 : 8. The total number of females in the club is 51. How many members are male? FEMALE : MALE 3 : 8 x 17 x 17 : 136 51 ? Therefore, 136 members of the tennis club are male.

  7. Which ones are you using? Team Worker Creative Thinker Effective Participator Independent Enquirer Reflective Learner Self Manager • LINK BACK TO OBJECTIVES • Accurately calculate with ratios when only one part of the information is known. What grade are we working at? DISCOVERY PLT Skills

  8. PLENARY ACTIVITY In a room, the ratio of men to women is 7:2. If there are 42 men, there are 12 women. TRUE FALSE Stand Up Remain Seated

  9. PLENARY ACTIVITY In a box, the ratio of nails to screws is 8:5. If there are 16 screws, there are 10 nails? TRUE FALSE Stand Up Remain Seated

  10. PLENARY ACTIVITY An alloy consists of copper, zinc and tin in the ratios 2:3:5. If there is 20g of copper, there are 30g of tin and 50g of zinc. TRUE FALSE Stand Up Remain Seated

  11. What grade are we working at? Where are we in our journey? What have you learnt? Draw your brain In your brain, write or draw everything you can remember about calculating with ratios when only one part of the information is known. It can be a skill or a reflection, or something else that might be prominent in your brain.
