  2. Take a naturally occurring relationship Unconditioned Response Unconditioned Stimulus The dog naturally salivates when it see the food.

  3. Add a neutral stimulus Unconditioned Stimulus Unconditioned Response Neutral Stimulus Pair the food with the bell and Repeat, Repeat, Repeat. The dog learns to associate the bell with food.

  4. Remove the original stimulus Unconditioned Response Neutral Stimulus Now, we just ring the bell. And what is this? The dog is salivating without the food being there!

  5. Now, the neutral stimulus causes the response. Conditioning has occurred Conditioned Stimulus Conditioned Response The dog has been conditioned to associate the bell with food! YAY!

  6. Naturally occurring relationship Unconditioned Response Unconditioned Stimulus Shark Fear

  7. Add the neutral stimulus and repeat Unconditioned Stimulus Unconditioned Response Shark Neutral Stimulus Fear Jaws Music

  8. Remove unconditioned stimuls Neutral Stimulus Unconditioned Response Jaws Music Fear

  9. Conditioning has occurred. Conditioned Stimulus Conditioned Response Jaws Music Fear Now the music causes fear all on its own. Even without the shark.
