  1. Oxidation It’s everywhere man!

  2. Q: What does it involve? A: The combination of an element/molecule with Oxygen in the air or water… Q: What is the balanced chemical equation? __Fe3C+__O2 ----> __C+__Fe2O A: 4Fe3C+3O2 ----> 4C+6Fe2O Q: What are some indicators that it has happened? A: Rust, Tarnish, Patina, Corrosion, Fire,

  3. Natural Rust: Q: What could make rock/dirt “rust” A: The rocks/dirt have Iron (Fe) in them that is reacting with Oxygen in the air/rain water causing the rust color So, when you see rocks with this “rusted” color you know That they likely have Iron (Fe) in them and that is oxidizing! The sandstone here is red & orange. This color change is due to a natural rusting process.

  4. Patina: Patina Brand New 120 years later it’s a greenish color Patina is the result of Copper being oxidized! Even Magnito (from X-men) knew what the S. of L. was made of!

  5. This is a picture of a concrete bridge that has collapsed! Metal rebar is used to hold up concrete, but it can get oxidized by water or air. When the metal “corrodes” it can’t support the concrete and it can collapse. Imagine how many bridges were built a LONG time ago and the metal has been there a LONG time… Corrosion Corrosion:

  6. Tarnish/Rust Tarnish:

  7. Fast Oxidation (combustion): Spontaneous Combustion The firework display you see here is the result of chemicals reaction VERY fast with oxygen in the air and you see the sweet explosion!

  8. “Red” Blood? Q: Why is blood red? A: It has been oxidized! Q: Where does the Oxygen come from? A: The blood from the heart first goes to the lungs and reacts with the oxygen we inhale! Q: What in our blood is the oxygen reacting with? A: Red blood cells have Iron (Fe) in them

  9. Respiration: Respiration is • Inhaling oxygen • blood transport of oxygen and glucose (from food) • to cells to make energy (move, grow, reproduce, daily living stuff)! The reaction looks like this: C6H12O6 + 6O26CO2 + 6H2O + Energy Energy

  10. Photosynthesis: The reaction looks like this: 6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy C6H12O6 + 6O2 Plants do photosynthesis by Obtaining water (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) Absorbing sunlight (radiant energy) Converting it to food (chemical energy) C6H12O6 and O2!

  11. Life would not exist without Oxidation: Take a good look at the two reactions we just discussed. Do you notice anything? Respiration: C6H12O6 + 6O26CO2 + 6H2O + Energy Photosynthesis: 6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy C6H12O6 + 6O2 The two reactions are opposites of each other! Plants make what we need, and we make what plants need! Think: what would happen to everything If we eliminated either the plants or the animals…

  12. Review: • Oxidation Reactions combine oxygen with another substance • It can be fast or slow (indicators will be different depending on speed) • Some of the indicators of oxidation are: • Rust, Patina, Tarnish • Explosions/fire (fast reactions!) • Corrosion • Light (very fast reactions!)
