  2. A food borne infection refers to the inflammation of the stomach and bowels. The condition is caused by the intake of foods contaminated by bacteria, viruses or parasites. The symptoms of a foodborne infection include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, cramp and fever. A foodborne illness can last between one to three days. The common food related infections are Salmonella infection (Salmonellosis), Clostridium perfringens infection (C.perfringens), Escherichia coli (E-coli) infections, Listeria infection, Norovirus infection, and indigestion/heart problems/high blood sugar. Maintaining hygiene, both personal and in the surroundings, plays a key role in preventing food related issues. There are specific ICD-10 codes to report food-borne infections.
