  3. Determine Your Purpose • Express emotions (diary, journal, autobiographical memoir, letter) • Inform (newspaper, instructional text, encyclopedia entry) • Persuade (proposal, editorial, moral essay, stand on politics, ethics, etc.) • To Amuse or Entertain

  4. Identifying Your Audience • Academic Audience (instructor) • Peers (other students) • Opposing parties Consider your audience’s education, expectations, and interest.

  5. Setting Your Tone Tone is your attitude about the subject. • Formal • Informal

  6. Analyze Your Assignment • Page limit • Time Limitations • Research Requirements • Format • Topic

  7. Choosing a Topic • Choose Subject (History, Literature, etc) • Narrow the topic

  8. Getting Started • Collect Ideas for Narrowed Topic • Read and Observe • Free write • Brainstorm • Ask Questions • Journal

  9. Now. . .Get Started • Begin rough draft with no consideration to mechanics. Just write!
