  2. What is it? • A group of new ideas in literature, religion, culture, and philosophy that emerged in New England in the 1800s • Began as a protest against culture and society

  3. Core Beliefs: • There is an ideal spiritual state that “transcends” anything physical and is realized only through the individual’s intuition – not through religion, school, or society • This spiritual state can be found in nature, through meditation • Nature is the outward sign of inward spirit

  4. In other words . . . People should live: • Simply • In nature • By their intuition • Not by rules, laws or technology

  5. Who believed in this? • Transcendental Writers • Critics of society for its mindless conformity • Emerson – author who urged individuals to find “an original relation to the universe.”

  8. Thoreau • July 12, 1817 – May 6, 1862 • Poet, naturalist, tax resister, philosopher • Walden – reflection on simple living in natural surroundings • Civil Disobedience – argument of individual resistance to civil government
