  3. Plot (definition) • Plot is the organized pattern or sequence of events that make up a story. Every plot is made up of a series of incidents that are related to one another.

  4. Exposition • This usually occurs at the beginning of a short story. Here the characters are introduced. We also learn about the setting of the story. Most importantly, we are introduced to the main conflict (main problem).

  5. 2. Point of Attack • The first main event occurs which marks the beginning of the rising action. The plot “takes off.”

  6. 3. Rising Action • This part of the story begins to develop the conflict(s). A building of interest or suspense occurs.

  7. 4. Climax • This is the turning point of the story. Usually the main character comes face to face with a conflict. The main character will change in some way.

  8. 5. Falling Action (Denouement) • All loose ends of the plot are tied up. The conflict(s) and climax are taken care of.

  9. 6. Resolution • The story comes to a reasonable ending.

  12. Setting The setting is both the time and place where the action occurs.

  13. Character The character is a person, an animal, or an imaginary creature that takes part in the action of a literary work. • Protagonist- involved in the main conflict of the plot and often changes during the course of the work • Antagonist-the force working against the protagonist

  14. Conflict Conflict is a struggle between opposing forces. • Person vs. Person • Person vs. Self • Person vs. Nature • Person vs. Society

  15. Theme A theme is the message about life or human nature that is conveyed by a literary work.

  16. Cause-Effect Relationship Two events are related as cause and effect when one event brings about the other. The event that happens first is the cause; the one that follows is the effect.

  17. Inference An inference is a logical guess or conclusion based on evidence. Reading “between” the lines

  18. Author’s Purpose • An author’s purpose is his or her reason for creating a particular work. • to entertain • to explain or inform • to express an opinion • to persuade readers to do or believe something
