    5. Political parties do two basic things: They nominate, or select, candidates for public office. They develop a platform – the official position on all of the issues facing America. Plank – Each issue in the platform.

    6. NATIONAL CONVENTION Every four years the major political parties come together to nominate candidates for President and Vice-President and to develop their party’s platform.

Primary Elections – The winner, or nominee, does not win the public office, but rather gets a chance to run for the public office with the undivided support of the political party. General Elections – The candidates from different political parties run against each other to win the public office.

    10. CONSERVATIVES Tend to be cautious about change. Believe government should stay out of the affairs of private citizens and businesses as much as possible. Stress private enterprise and business. Often associated with the Republicans.

    11. RADICALS Tend to favor rapid, fundamental changes in society. Extreme in their views and will not compromise. Associated with groups like: Ku Klux Klan; Black Panthers; Nazis; Green Peace; Religious Cults; etc.
