  2. This Award is presented periodically in recognition of an individual who has made outstanding contributions in the field of medical education, primarily in community teaching hospitals.

  3. Award recipients are recognized for their initiative, creativity and leadership in advancing the field of medical education

  4. The John C. Leonard Award was established by AHME to recognize John C. Leonard, who was the first Director of Medical Education in the United States.

  5. Dr. Leonard served in this capacity at the Hartford Hospital where he completed his nineteen yard career as a distinguished medical educator.

  6. He is credited for developing the position of DME as we know it today. His significant contribution to community teaching hospitals positively influenced the direction and course of graduate medical education

  7. Joined AHME in 1967 • One of the first to non-M.D.’s allowed as a full member • First AHME meetings held with Congress on Medical Education • Late 70’s, became long time chair of the Member Services Committee • 1982 – First non-physician appointed to the Board of Directors • One of the original group that formed the CTYPD, and was it’s secretary for ten years

  8. In mid 80’s, developed templates to instruct community teaching hospitals on the new methodology for financing GME • Recommended development of Government Relations Committee in 1990. At that time, William Michner, M.D., DME at the Cleveland Clinic brought Dan Nickelson to the table • Worked with Ernie Hammel to bring first Poster Session in the 1990’s • Was elected as First non-physician President Elect in 1993 and became AHME President 1995 – 1997 • Currently is the AHME representative to ECFMG
