  1. SHOCK VALUE 2012 Science Olympiad Coaches Clinic Indiana University Northwest James D. Wozniewski, presenter

  2. DESCRIPTION A TEAM OF TWO (2) STUDENTS (GRADES 6-9) WILL COMPETE IN ACTIVITIES THAT INVOLVE BASIC UNDERSTANDING OF ELECTRICITY, MAGNETISM, AND SIMPLE ELECTRICAL DEVICES.

  3. TERMS • BATTERY • CURRENT FLOW • ELECTRON FLOW • AND DIAGRAMS • SCHEMATICS

  4. PARTICIPANTS ARE ALLOWED NOTES AND/OR CALCULATORS. NOTES WILL BE SECURED IN A 3 HOLE BINDER CALCULATORS WILL NOT HAVE ANY PROBES OR SENSORS ATTACHED TO THEM

  5. EVENT SUPERVISORS PROVIDE ANY NEEDED MEASUREMENT EQUIPMENT

  6. THE COMPETITION 50% HANDS ON 50% THEORETICAL SUPERVISORS TO PRESENT DATA MEASUREMENT EQUIPMENT OR PROVIDE A DEMONSTRATION WITH DATA IN TABULAR OR GRAPHIC FORMAT

  7. SUPERVISOR MAY PROVIDE MATHEMATICAL RELATIONS, BUT STUDENT ARE EXPECTED TO NOTE THE FOLLOWING: • BASIC ELECTRICAL DC CIRCUIT THEORY CONSISTING OF • CONCEPTS OF VOLTAGE LEVELS • CURRENT FLOW AND DIRECTION • ELECTRICAL PATHWAYS • VOLTS, AMPERES, OHMS, SCHEMATICS • OHM’S LAW

  8. BASIC ELECTRICAL DEVICE CONCEPTS • BATTERY POLARITY • PARALLEL VS SERIES CIRCUITS RESISTOR • LIGHT BULB AND MOTOR • DRY VS WET CELLS

  9. BASIC ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT CONSTRUCTION AND ANALYSIS • SWITCHES • POWER SOURCE • VOLTMETER MEASUREMENTS • LIGHT BULB/MOTOR CONNECTIONS • KITCHEN BUILT BATTERIES

  10. BASIC MAGNETISM CONCEPTS • NORTH AND SOUTH POLES • EARTH’S MAGNETIC FIELD • ELECTROMAGNET PRINCIPLES • MAGNETIC VS NONMAGNETIC MATERIALS • MAGNET SHAPES AND TYPES

  11. BASIC MAGNETIC APPLICATIONS USE OF COMPASS TO DETERMINE POLES OF A MAGNET OPERATION OF AN ELECTROMAGNET USE OF MAGNETS IN MOTORS

  12. TOPICS THAT MUST NOT BE INCLUDED • SEMICONDUCTORS • AC CIRCUIT THEORY AND DEVICES • CAPACITORS • INDUCTORS

  13. EXAMPLES OF STATIONS SUPERVISOR PROVIDES THE FOLLOWING COMPONENTS: • WIRES • BATTERIES • LIGHT BULBS • RESISTORS PARTICIPANTS ARRANGE AND WIRE COMPONENTS IN SUCH A MANNER TO PRODUCE THE BRIGHTEST BURNING BULB

  14. EXAMPLES OF QUESTIONS PARTICIPANTS WILL DRAW THE CIRCUIT DIAGRAM (SCHEMATIC) OF THE PREVIOUS EXERCISE • LABELS WILL INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING; • RESISTANCE • VOLTAGE & POLARITY • CURRENT FLOW • ELECTRON FLOW PARTICIPANTS WILL PROVIDE A WRITTEN DESCRIPTION AS TO WHY THIS IS THE OPTIMAL COMPONENT CONFIGURATION.

  15. SCORING POINTS WILL BE AWARDED FOR CORRECT ANSWERS AND/OR PROPER TECHNIQUE TIES WILL BE BROKEN USING A DESIGNATED QUESTION OR TASK. THE TIE BREAKER WILL BE DESIGNATED ON THE ANSWER FORM

  16. BLOCK DIAGRAM D C X2 X3 X1 B X5 X6 X4 A X9 X8 X7 X10

  17. POSSIBLE QUESTIONS • REFER TO THE BLOCK DIAGRAM AND THE ABOVE TABLE: • WHAT DIRECTION (SCHEMATIC) IS THE CURRENT FLOW INDICATED BETWEEN POINTS C & D IF THE POSITIVE BATTERY POINT IS LOCATED TO THE LEFT? • C TOWARDS D OR D TOWARDS C

  18. POSSIBLE QUESTIONS ii. REFER TO THE BLOCK DIAGRAM AND THE ABOVE TABLE: WHAT IS THE RESISTANCE MEASURED AT POINTS A & B?

  19. POSSIBLE QUESTIONS ii. REFER TO THE BLOCK DIAGRAM AND THE ABOVE TABLE: WHAT IS THE RESISTANCE MEASURED AT POINTS A & B?

  20. POSSIBLE QUESTIONS iii. REFER TO THE BLOCK DIAGRAM AND THE ABOVE TABLE: WHAT IS THE VOLTAGE MEASURED AT POINTS A & B?

  21. POSSIBLE QUESTIONS iii. REFER TO THE BLOCK DIAGRAM AND THE ABOVE TABLE: WHAT IS THE VOLTAGE MEASURED AT POINTS C & D?

  22. POSSIBLE QUESTIONS iii. REFER TO THE BLOCK DIAGRAM AND THE ABOVE TABLE: WHAT IS THE VOLTAGE MEASURED AT POINTS C & D?

  23. POSSIBLE QUESTIONS iii. REFER TO THE BLOCK DIAGRAM AND THE ABOVE TABLE: WHAT IS THE CURRENT MEASURED AT POINTS C & D?

  24. POSSIBLE QUESTIONS iv. COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING TABLE:

  25. v. IDENTIFY THE POLES A & B IN THE FOLLOWING DIAGRAM AND CIRCLE THE CORRECT ANSWERS: A B BAR MAGNET N A = NORTH POLE A = SOUTH POLE B= NORTH POLE B= SOUTH POLE COMPASS

  26. PLEASE HELP with my grand daughter's science fair project! She needs parents, teachers, and students to take her online quiz. PLEASE take the online quiz at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/L77RJKX and ask everyone you know to take it, too?
