  2. Robert Schumann • Robert Schumann was born in Zwickau, Germany on June 8, 1810. • He was only 46 when he died on July 29, 1856 in Endenich, Germany. • He was an arch-Romantic composer. • Most significant contribution: composed Papillons, Op. 2 and the Paganini Caprices, Op. 3.

  3. Education • Studied law at Leipzig University. • He worked with Friedrich Wieck and later married his daughter, Clara.

  4. Composer • Co-founding the influential NeueZeitschriftfürMusik and attracting attention early with his prophetic praise of Chopin. • In 1841 was a "year of songs" in which he brought the Romantic song cycle. • He invented the short, poetic, descriptive Romantic piano work, and produced such works in 1830s.

  5. Musical writer • Many of his articles take the form of dialogues featuring the "League of David," young artists fighting the "Philistines."
