  3. What is Competition? • The rivalry among businesses to sell goods/services to consumers and make the greatest profit. • Examples- Fast Food Industry, Car Companies, Cell Phone Companies, etc.

  4. Time zones • Calculate what time it is in your province based on the following game time information: • Toronto 5:30 pm • Vancouver 7:30 pm • Edmonton 5:00 pm • Calgary 7:00 pm • Montreal 5:00 pm

  5. Cow is to steak, as pig is to______.A. veal B. slop C. ham D. poke • Read the Handout. • Discuss the following questions: • What kinds of things do farmers feed pigs? • What would cause the prices of feed to go up? • Why would farmers slaughter hogs when feed prices increase? • Why would fewer hogs be available for sale after the prices drop? • What does the article say has affected demand? • What are some other things that could affect demand?

  6. What kinds of things do farmers feed pigs? Grains, like corn. • What would cause the prices of feed to go up? Weather conditions or crop diseases that might cause the price of grains to rise. • Why would farmers slaughter hogs when feed prices increase? Cheaper to kill them than feed them until they got bigger. • Why would fewer hogs be available for sale after the prices drop? Fewer pigs would have been born. • What does the article say has affected demand? Fast food breakfasts, BLT season, vacation travelers. • What are some other things that could affect demand? Medical studies on fats, bacteria scares, big seller in restaurants, cookbook sales, etc.

  7. Supply and Demand Example • Think about yesterday’s “ice” activity. • Using examples from the discussion questions from Manitoba Pigs, create as many discussion questions about “ice” from Canada as possible. • The number of questions will be counted in the competition total.

  8. Province Advertisement • Using the province summary, create an advertisement for your province. • The class will assess, with a thumbs up, thumbs down, or flat hand. • In the end, I will determine the winner, which will be counted toward the competition. • If a different province wins different competitions, the winner will be determined by myself (Mrs. McFarlane), based on overall effort, creativity, evidence of thinking, and participation.
