  1. Man at the Pool Read John 5:2-16 Notice that Jesus was not at the temple but at the pool with the downtrodden of life Feast may have been Passover or Feast of the Tabernacles By the sheep gate is a pool Pool with 4 porches around it and one in the middle

  2. Ancient superstition ascribes healing power to water V4 added later to preserve folklore of the time Disturbance caused by an intermittent spring In those times, attributed action to a divinity Jewish superstition substituted an angel First in gets healed explains V7

  3. What do you think this man was like? No friends around, frustrated All that mattered was to be first in the water Only choices are to beg and live of charity of others Lost hope

  4. Did he really expect to be healed or was it just a way of life? He gives Jesus an excuse why he has not been healed In times of trouble, friends sort themselves by their degree of caring What has been your observation? Some people make it difficult for their friends to care Some make their family and friends feel guilty Jesus’ response is to heal him

  5. How do you respond to the idea that illness is caused by sin? Man carries his pallet on his back on the Sabbath, against the rules Pallet is a poor man’s bed, light and flexible Easily rolled and carried OK to carry a man on a pallet, pallet is secondary Carrying pallet not allowed (Jer. 17:21) 39 works not permitted on Sabbath Critics felt man had lasted 38 years in this state what does one day matter V.14 Jesus tells him things could be worse What could be worse than lying 38 years on a mat?

  6. Got Jesus into trouble, maybe not intentionally To benefit such a drab personality, Jesus brought the wrath of the religious leaders on Himself By human standards this was too high a price to pay Easy to love those who love us (Matt. 5:43-48) People with my kind of faults are easy to love What is your experience with this?

  7. Why did Jesus choose this man out of all those around, surely there were more deserving? Chose most desperate case in the place Gives hope to those who have lost hope Lives on the edge of life not involving themselves in anything They sit by the pool watching others go in What really paralyzed this man? Maybe fear?

  8. Here is a man who has lost every race for 38 years So beaten down by life he has become reconciled to it Some a raised to expect the worse from life Self-despising, feeling not worthy of anything good, looks for rejection Do they enjoy sitting alone in their pain and playing poor me?

  9. Where was the faith in this healing? Jesus died not only for those who accept him but for those who reject Him How do you feel about this statement?

  10. How does this apply to us, we can all walk But we may be crippled in other ways Verses show what the man could not do alone, he could do with Christ We all read and listen to the promises in the Bible We claim the promises, but can any of us be more than we are today? What holds you back, keeps you on the mat so to speak? Do we really want what we say we want?

  11. Do we want to be like Christ but at a distance? Man says if I could just get up and walk I could do so many good things Bothers us to move out of our comfort zone The life to which the man was accustomed held more for him than the life for which he longed until Jesus came into his life Not unpleasant to sit in the shade by the pool while others working in the hot sun Do we want to be made whole if it means being more like Christ

  12. When others look at us do we seem any different from them? Can they see the love of Christ shining through in our lives?
