  2. What is non-fiction? • Based on fact. • Set in a real time and real place • Actual events “Truth can be stranger than fiction. It can be undeniable, incredible, amazing, and sometimes horrifying. Truth doesn’t bother itself with events that might have happened or could have happened; only with events that actually did happen.” What do you think this quote means?

  7. Important People in the Book… • Doris-daughter of Helen and Siegfried • Helen- German Jew who lived in Frankfurt, Germany. • Siegfried- Helen’s husband • Alfons- German who became high ranking officer in the Hitler Youth

Important People in the War… • Allied Powers- Britain, France, the United States, and the Soviet Union were the most prominent members, although many other countries also joined. • Axis Powers- the collective term for Germany, Italy, and Japan’s military alliance • Neville Chamberlain-The prime minister of Britain from 1937 to 1940 • Winston Churchill- The prime minister of Britain during most of World War II.  • Dwight D. Eisenhower- A U.S. Army general who held the position of supreme Allied commander in Europe • Benito Mussolini- prime minister who came to power in 1922 and ruled Italy as an absolute dictator • Franklin Delano Roosevelt- The32nd U.S. president, who led the country through the bulk of World War II until his death in April 1945, just a few months before the war ended • Joseph Stalin- General secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1922 until his death in 1953 • Harry S Truman- The33rd U.S. president, who succeeded Franklin D. Roosevelt upon Roosevelt’s death in April 1945

Key Terms… • Holocaust- the intentional murder of Jews, gypsies, and Jehovah’s Witnesses • Genocide- the intentional murder of an entire race of people • Jungvolk- young folk • Kristallnacht- night of broken glass • Propaganda- information, ideas, or rumors spread widely to help or harm a person or group • Luftwaffe- German Air Force • Blitzkrieg- lightning war • The Final Solution- Nazi plan to exterminate the Jews • Mein Kampf- book written by Adolf Hitler in which he outlined his plans for the NAZI party

More Key Terms… • Gestapo- Nazi Police force • der Fuhrer- the leader • Night and Fog Decree- Plan to eliminate all “threats” to the Third Reich • Overlord- Greatest Sea to land invasion of all time • Bannfuhrer- military ranking in the Hitler Youth • Kapo- prison leader in each barrack that made sure the other prisoners behaved properly • Nuremburg Trials- trial for high ranking Nazi’s for crimes committed during the war • NAZI- political party who believed in National Socialism

  13. Key Places… • Auschwitz- concentration camp which was used to intentionally kills Jews • West Wall- the gateway into the Fatherland which ran along the western border of West Germany • Kratzau- concentration camp where Helen lived • Wittlich- town where Alfons lived and his family had a farm
