  2. 동학 농민 운동(東學農民運動)은 1894년 동학 지도자들과 농민들에 일어난 민중의 무장 봉기를 가리키며, 크게 1894년 음력 3월의 고부 봉기(제1차)와 음력 9월의 전주·광주 궐기(제2차)로 나뉜다. 동학농민전쟁(東學農民戰爭), 동학농민혁명(東學農民革命)으로도 불리며, 갑오년에 일어났기 때문에 갑오농민운동(甲午農民運動), 갑오농민전쟁(甲午農民戰爭)이라고도 한다. 청일 전쟁의 직접적인 원인이 되었다.

  3. <역사> 조선 고종 31년(1894)에 전라도 고부의 동학 접주(接主) 전봉준 등을 지도자로 동학도와 농민들이 합세하여 일으킨 농민 운동. 고부 군수 조병갑의 횡포와 착취에 대한 항거에서 발단하여 한때는 관군을 무찌르고 삼남 지방을 휩쓸었으나, 결국 중국 청나라와 일본의 개입으로 실패로 끝났다. 후에 항일 의병 투쟁과 3·1 운동으로 계승되었다. ≒갑오농민전쟁·동학 운동·동학 혁명. 조선 후기 동학 농민 운동의 지도자(1855~1895). 초명·자는 명숙(明叔). 호는 해몽(海夢). 고부 군수 조병갑의 수탈에 항거하여 동학 농민 운동을 일으켜 맹위를 떨쳤으나, 관군과 일본군에게 패하여 이듬해에 처형되었다.
