  2. Big Ideas • How did the growth of trade change feudal society in Europe? • How did the technologies of war affect society in Europe? • What were the causes of social upheaval? • How were the attitudes towards the catholic church changing?

  3. Quick Review from last class • Why were castles important? • What were the two types of battles that took place? • What was the code that Knights swore to? • What types of weapons were used in their period • Who was the 100 years war between? • Which country had a technological advantage and what was it?

  4. Battle of Agincourt 1415

  5. Results • The French Army lost between 40, 000 – 50, 000 people • This included almost 50% of the countries nobles • What effect do you think this would have? • England would continue their campaign capturing almost half of France

  6. Joan of Arc • 1429 a 17 year old peasant girl appeared in the French courts saying that she heard voices from God that he had commanded her to drive the English out of France • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpswyzn-LZA

  7. Joan of Arc • Won many battles for the French and helped to unite the people • Was captured and sold to England where she was put on trial in a Church Court for heresy and witchcraft • One piece of evidence was that she wore means clothes • She was convicted and burned at the stake when she was 19

  8. Outcomes of the War • Towards the end of the war the French improved artillery technology and made mobile cannons • This ended the advantage of the English Longbow • Society Changes: • English were defeated and tired of fighting with France turned their attention to exploration across the Atlantic • Feudal nobility were almost all dead but citizens in both countries became unified under nationalistic pride • Advancements in technology had made commoners more useful in battles which undermined the social status of feudal lords and knights • Wars would now be fought by vast armies not vassals

  9. Big idea! • How did the technologies of war affect society in Europe? • Come up with a 3-4 ideas and write them down in your notes to share
