  1. Physics Cases Summary Matt AmthorBucknell University ReA12 Recoil Separator Workshop – July 12, 2014

  2. Timeline of physics cases • August 2013 Low Energy Community Meeting, MSU • Recoil separator satellite workshop • Recoil separator working group meeting • Goal: to select a preferred separator system • Conclusions: • Physics cases must come first: details, not just concepts • Many experiments need a larger mass resolving power than a gas-filled option can provide (keep gas-filled-mode concept) • Solicitation and collection of physics cases from the community after August and again in Spring 2014 • 17 physics cases collected • “Evaluated” by working group conveners to determine unidentified experimental parameters (→spreadsheet). ReA12 Recoil Separator Workshop, East Lansing

  3. Community interest questionnaire ReA12 Recoil Separator Workshop, East Lansing

  4. Physics Cases – Landscapeincl. mostof the NSAC RIB TF Benchmarks Heavy ion fusion to n-rich SHE Decay of heavy n-rich nuclei for r-process Heavy n-rich structure and production by MNT • Exotic p-rich structure • Pairing correlation nn-correlations toward the dripline 2007 NSAC RIB Taskforce Benchmarks: 1 Shell Structure 2 Superheavies 4 Pairing 5 Symmetries 13 Limits of Stability 15 Mass Surface 7 r-Process 16 rp-Process 11 Stewardship science • Non-local Cases: • H/He gas jet target for astrophysics beyond SECAR • (d,p) surrogate reactions for astrophysics and stewardship (light to Uranium) • Fusion barrier distribution from CN spin distribution • Collectivity in rare isotopes from level lifetimes, γ-spec. p-rich (p,γ) rates, A>50 n-rich shell evolution (d,n) for nuc. astrophysics Deep inelastic gamma spec of n-rich Cross-shell excitations in p isotopes Precise EM transitions ReA12 Recoil Separator Workshop, East Lansing

  5. Why such diversity? ReA12 Recoil Separator Workshop, East Lansing

  6. Physics Cases Auxiliary Systems • Target area • GRET(IN)A, CAESAR, SuN, HAGRiD • ORRUBA • HELIOS (proposed?) • Plunger • LENDA, VANDLE • Gas jet target • Focal plane • TOF, dE, TKE, (tracking) • Implantation decay, multiple channels: α, β, γ, n, fission. ReA12 Recoil Separator Workshop, East Lansing

  7. Recoil Separator Needs • Space about the target for detection, targets, swinger, etc. • Achromatic image (small FP) for implantation → decay • Bρmax = 2.5 Tm (for gas-filled mode) • Eρmax = 105 MV (median 42 MV) • Swinger for incoming beam angles up to 5o degrees • M/Q resolving power up to 1000 (most 100-400) • Q and Bρ acceptance +/-10% (larger helps for some) • Angular Acceptance +/-170 mrad (most +/- 10-110 mrad) • Physical M/Q separation: one yes (most no or don’t specify) • Bunch size/spacing: 200ps/80ns (most don’t specify) See the Physics Cases Spreadsheet for details by proposal.
