  2. Welcome • For this group of excercises, we’ll be learning how winds work, how to enter a whirlpool, understand the whrilpools movements, and then how to exit a whirlpool

  3. Order of Operations • Now, All things that deal with whirlpools and winds don’t just happen at random. There are set times when they will happen. This time is immediately after you move. So, there is an order of operation: • Move, Be moved, Shoot.

  4. Shoot? • We’ll be covering cannon fire in the next presentation, so you don’t need to worry about shooting just yet. But feel free to keep it in mind.

  5. Be Moved? • Be moved refers to actions from winds and/or whirlpools. While you probably made a choice to move into where they would move you, it’s not under your control at all. You just have to know how you’re going to be moved.

  6. Rounds vs. Turns • Many people will use many different terms, but for the purposes of this tutorial, the two following terms need to be defined: • Turn: A turn occurs every 30 seconds, during which your ships move and try to shoot each other. • Round: There are 4 rounds per Turn, each one encompassing moving, being moved, and then shooting.

  7. Winds • Winds, as you recall, look like this: • They will move you one direction in whatever way they are pointing. For example:

  8. We don’t care. • Regardless of which way your ship is facing, the wind will still move ye along it’s path. So…

  9. Beware!!! • Wind will blow ye forward, even if there are other objects in the way. If there are, you’ll simply run into those objects and stay where you are. • Running into objects gives you damage. How much, is a topic that will be discussed later in the Guns and Damage course. • As an example, the following picture would not change between rounds.

  10. Whirlpools • Now, Whirlpools are tricky. Each one takes up 4 spaces on the map. They always come in a 2x2 square. For our graphical purposes, I’ll show you what one looks like.

  11. Labels for Whirlpools • In order to explain how whrilpools move, I’m going to break each spot in a whrilpool down into 4 numbers. They are… 1 2 4 3

  12. Whirlpool movement • Now, when whirlpools move you, 2 things change. Your location, and your orientation. That is, what square you’re on, and what way you’re facing.

  13. Locatoin • Location is easy to determine. For every round you are in a whirlpool, it will move you to the opposite corner. So, from 1 to 3, and from 2 to 4. And vice versa. You can be stuck inside a whirlpool forever if ye do not move out of it.

  14. Orientation • Orientation is a Liitttle bit trickier. First, ye need to determine which way the whirlpool flows. Most of them move clockwise, but some move counterclockwise. Look for the open ended segments to determine that. My drawing isn’t that good, so I can’t show you what I mean.

  15. More orientation • Now, your ship will move with the flow of the whirlpool. Meaning, if the whirlpool goes clockwise, your ship will be rotated clockwise, and vice versa. So… This. This! BECOMES…

  16. Tricks to Whirlpools • There are many tricks to using a whirlpool. Here are a bunch that you can use quickly when using whirlpools, if you don’t have the time to figure out how you’re going to move.

  17. Power slide • If your side is to a whirlpool, and you turn into it, you will end up facing the same direction you where before, only 2 spaces over, and inside the whirlpool. • If your not side by side with the pool, you’ll end up in the same spot as if you had been side by side, just facing the opposite way than you where before.

  18. U-turn • If you enter a whirlpool, and have 1 turn inbetween moves where you do nothing, you’ll be facing the exact opposite of the way you went in the whirlpool. An excellent way to turn around.

  19. Please Hold… • If you’re already in a whirlpool, and facing into it, you can turn into the whirlpool in order to stay in the same place. This is very useful for firing upon a stationary target, dodging fire, or just throwing your opponent off a turn.

  20. Practice Makes Perfect • If you don’t have access to the Navy mission “Go defeating Brigands with the navy” Go practice your other skills in the navy some more. Especially navigation. Once ye can do BNav with the navy, I suggest ignoring your opponents, and taking some time to practice the skills I just told ye about.

  21. Practice with a Friend • You can also get a buddy to go to the Game Gardens with you (www.gamegardens.com) and practice your Bnav in the Bnav game there. The whirlpools move in the exact same way, so ye should get the hang of them in notime.

  22. The End • Well, that’s it for this time. Next time we’ll be going over Cannon fire and Damage, both to your boat and to your opponents. We’ll also be discussing Boat Sizes. So stay tuned!!!
