Pending Decisions • To keep as much of the navigation intact as possible and enhance usability through text links and promotional language by: • Consolidating home and splash pages into one home page with 4 different types of entry. • Featuring the about page on the home page and including basic information. • Create guest “welcome” page that leads to Literacy Explorer. • Re-format welcome pages as pop-ups without navigation that lead to • Literacy Explorer. • “Trimming” the registration process and explore the possibility of parallel • registration for single and group users. • Changing Story Selector to Story Builder and enhancing the connectivity of Literacy Explorer to Story Builder and Read from the Web.

Search: About LAO Contact Us | Site Index | Logout The LiteracyAccess Online sitehelps facilitators (parents, tutors, teachers, and others) work with children who are having difficulties becoming good readers. The site is a collaborative project between the Helen A. Kellar Institute for Human disAbilities, George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia, and the Parent Educational Advocacy Training Center, Springfield, Virginia. The project is in the third year of development and is funded by a Steppingstones to Technology grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Reasons to register for free on the LAO site: Literacy Exploreris based on a reading strategy, which involves three steps: Pre-Reading, Reading, and Post-Reading.   12. . Welcome to Literacy Explorer! Literacy Explorer provides you with a selection of reading activities, accompanied by helpful tips, tools, and resources designed to support you and your reader. Literacy Explorer is based on recent findings in literacy research, as well as current best practices in reading teaching. Literacy Explorer contains three reading activities designed to motivate readers be providing them with stimulating content at their reading level and in their areas of interest. Story Builder allows you to create a story, report, or essay using material from the world wide web or your own words. You can insert images and pictures in your story. Registered users can save their stories to be read later and can even publish their stories on the web. Read From the Web provides you with the opportunity to choose material on the world wide web and read it together, employing tips, resources, and strategies shown on the page. If you download the free screen reader BrowseAloud, you can listen to word pronunciation while you read. Read From the Bank allows you to choose a age level appropriate story from our story bank. Literacy Explorer is based on a reading strategy that involves three steps - pre-reading, reading, and post-reading. We provide activities and tips for each one of these steps. If you ever want to edit your account in the future (i.e., add new readers, create new groups, etc.), you can go to Facilitator Support, which is located on the main “stack of books” menu bar. Also, your reader(s) can take a reading assessment test, anytime, by going to the Testing Section. Plus, communicating with other facilitators and readers is easy, by going to the Communication Section. Continue
