    2. 1. SW impacts: Pleased to hear I won’t be covering the science in any great detail. Impossible to cover in just 15 mins. Exceptionally brief overview. Have to take the science as presented, but happy to take any questions later. 2. Policy research: Brief details on a 3 year study in the US investigating the impacts on operations and what Policy issues need to be addressed in order to provide meaningful and timely SW information. 3. Present Findings, Recommendations and a few examples of next steps being undertaken. I may also refer to “Space” operations in my talk as the impacts on future commercial space operations has been included in this work on behalf of the FAA.1. 4. Space Weather: What is it? Space Weather refers to changes in the space environment near Earth

    5. Space Weather: What is it?

    8. Other Space Weather Terms Coronal Mass Ejection (CME): A disturbance in the solar wind caused by a large-scale eruption on the Sun. Solar Flare: A small-scale eruption on the Sun that emits light (UV and x-rays) and particles (electrons and protons). Energetic Particles: Electrons and protons that have been accelerated to high speeds. Solar Wind: The outward flow of electrons, protons, and magnetic field. Geomagnetic Storm: The disturbance in the near-Earth environment that can upset technological systems and fuel bright Aurorae.

    9. Origin of cosmic rays – All background CR originates in our Galaxy, creates a constant rain of CR that is modulated by the SunOrigin of cosmic rays – All background CR originates in our Galaxy, creates a constant rain of CR that is modulated by the Sun

    13. Magnetosphere What happens when a CME hits Earth? Solar wind is deflected around Earth Deflected solar wind drags Earth’s magnetic field with it Magnetic field lines “reconnect” and accelerate particles Accelerated particles follow field lines to Earth Aurora is produced when particles hit Earth’s atmosphere

    22. WHAT HAPPENED? - Operational and Commercial impacts from the October-November activity “October/November Activity” – Bill Murtagh, SEC “Reactions to Solar Radiation Alert & Over the Pole Ops” -- Mike Stills, United “October-November Space Weather in the Southern Hemisphere” -- Ian Getley, Qantas WHY IT HAPPENED? - Assessing the Risks “Radiation Hazards” – Ron Zwickl, Deputy Director, SEC “Solar Flare Dose to Humans” -- Elizabeth Toedt, Netjets “In-Flight Radiation and Pregnancy” – Robert J. Barish, Ph.D., The Lenox Hill Heart and Vascular Institute of New York “Solar Energetic Particles (Radiation) Hazard to Humans & SEEs for Avionics” –Bryn Jones (for Simon Clucas, QinetiQ) “Communications & Navigation” – Tim Fuller-Rowell, CIRES/SECWHAT HAPPENED? - Operational and Commercial impacts from the October-November activity “October/November Activity” – Bill Murtagh, SEC “Reactions to Solar Radiation Alert & Over the Pole Ops” -- Mike Stills, United “October-November Space Weather in the Southern Hemisphere” -- Ian Getley, Qantas WHY IT HAPPENED? - Assessing the Risks “Radiation Hazards” – Ron Zwickl, Deputy Director, SEC “Solar Flare Dose to Humans” -- Elizabeth Toedt, Netjets “In-Flight Radiation and Pregnancy” – Robert J.
