  1. Planned Parenthood and E-Advocacy Jennifer Frazier Sr. Technology Manager, PPFA June 9, 2003 Jennifer Frazier, Sr. Technology Manager, PPFA, jennifer.frazier@ppfa.org

  2. Planned Parenthood and E-Advocacy Background on the Action Network • 5,000 members in 1999 -- 350,000 today • Activation response rate grown from 8% to average of 12-15% -- high as 25-30% (Ashcroft, Owen) • Moved onto Get Active Software in January 2003 – since January 1.8 million messages, 300,000 letters • 42 of 50 states and 101 of our 125 affiliates have access to the network • SaveRoe.com and plannedparenthood.org Jennifer Frazier, Sr. Technology Manager, PPFA, jennifer.frazier@ppfa.org

  3. Planned Parenthood and E-Advocacy Examples of our work in action PA: Activated 5,500 activists on state-based gag rule. Got 500 responses in first day. After 1,000 faxes came in, the chair of the House Appropriations Committee told the pro-choice coalition to “Stop the %&#&**@&# emails!”. NJ: Statewide activation on family planning funding. Sent message to approx. 10,000 activists. Over 5300 faxes were sent. Wayne Bryant's office faxed back a nasty note saying that the volume of faxes they were receiving "shut down the office." Jennifer Frazier, Sr. Technology Manager, PPFA, jennifer.frazier@ppfa.org

  4. Planned Parenthood and E-Advocacy Examples of our work in action CA: Feinstein—Kuhl nomination. Feinstein changed her mind and decided to oppose Kuhl after receiving 3,000 messages from her constituents. We know from our tool that we sent 2215 from Planned Parenthood. MD: PP of Maryland forced Baltimore Mayor Martin O’Malley, a gubernatorial candidate, to come forward as ‘pro-choice’ after receiving 175 faxes from constituents asking him to publicly state his position.   Affiliates often send alerts to ask their activists to attend rallies, counter demonstrations, to volunteer phone bank, table at events, etc. Jennifer Frazier, Sr. Technology Manager, PPFA, jennifer.frazier@ppfa.org

  5. Planned Parenthood and E-Advocacy How did we make all this happen? • Grants, Grants, Grants • Start small, stay focused • Plan for funding technology • Plan for use of technology • Finding the right staff • In-house or out source? • Plan for hiring technology staff • Build organizational buy-in for E-Advocacy • Demonstrate Success • Add on to existing organizing strategies—not in a vacuum • Incorporate into core objectives and mission Jennifer Frazier, Sr. Technology Manager, PPFA, jennifer.frazier@ppfa.org
