There’s a lot more to it than just applying for a patent and waiting for it to be approved or denied. A patent application gives you the exclusive right to develop and market your invention to the public for a limited period of time. In the United States, a patent is good for 20 years from the date you file.During that time, other companies are free to use and sell the patent as they see fit.
