  1. Community Elective –Head Start Orange CountyBy: Ellie Lagerberg, Rachael Woods and Kristin Bell

  2. Objectives Educate children about the five food groups in MyPlate Teach children how to differentiate between the food groups Train children to identify foods belonging to each food group

  3. MyPlate Teaching Plan • To complete the objectives a teaching plan was developed. • Introduce children to MyPlate • Ask the children to participate by identifying foods using plastic samples of different foods 3.Create a game to interactively identify foods and what food group it belongs to

  4. Game The children were all gathered in the center of a big mat and each of the interns were placed in the corner of the mat holding a sign with the different food groups. One intern held up a plastic sample of a food and the kids were asked to identify the sample (according to MyPlate) Once the children had identified the sample the kids were asked to move to the corner for which food group the sample belonged too. The steps were repeated at least once to include a sample from each food group. After the game the activity was summarized by showing the children a plastic plate made to look like MyPlate. The plate was used to reinforce the different components of a healthy plate and to educate the children when they eat food at home their plate needs to contain all five food groups.

  5. Conclusion Overall the children did pretty well in participating in the game and responses varied depending on age group; the younger the children were the less they understood the concepts of “food groups”

  6. Areas for Improvement If we were to do this project again, we would formulate different lesson plans depending on age group (due to time constraints we were only able to come up with one lesson plan) If we were to do this again we would have also liked to divide the kids into smaller groups so that better attention could be given to each of the children. Lastly, if we were to do this project again, we would have liked to have more resources to help drive the concept home about healthy lifestyles, perhaps talk about the importance of exercise as well.
