  1. Sermon on the Mount Mt 5:27-30

  2. Book Recommendations: • Rob Bell “Sex God” £5.98 from Book Depository. £5.99 from Amazon

  3. Book Recommendations: • Stanley Grenz “Sexual Ethics” £8.49 (used) from Amazon £13.61 from Alibris

  4. Stories from the world around: • “try before you buy” • “play the field” • casual sex … recreational sex • It doesn’t matter what you do, as long as it doesn’t hurt someone else. • “if it feels good, just do it” • “consenting adults” • you have right to sexual fulfilment • traditional attitudes to sexuality are old fashioned, outdated and repressed. • no-body has a right to tell me or anyone else what is right or wrong regarding sexuality

  5. Genesis 1:26,27 • Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, … So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

  6. Genesis 1:26,27 • Imago Dei – unique to all creation. The intrinsic value and dignity of human beings • “Affective” and “Genital” sexuality. • Sexual Desire vs. Desire for Sex • “sexual desire refers to the need we all share to experience wholeness and intimacy through relationships with others. It refers to the dimension called eros, the human longing to posses and be possessed by the object of one’s desire.” The Meaning of Sex - Hollinger

  7. Genesis 2:18-25 The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”… The man said,  "This is now bone of my bones   and flesh of my flesh;   she shall be called 'woman'   for she was taken out of man." For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.

  8. Genesis 2:18-25 • Helper – can mean one who saves God’s desire therefore was to create another human being who would deliver Adam from his solitude by being a suitable bonding partner for him, not merely sexually, but in all dimension[Grenz] • A desire to bond “The Genesis narrative indicates that the sexual nature of the human person forms the impulse that drives an individual beyond the self to seek bonding with others.” • Ish and Ishah

  9. “Connecting/Bonding” • God: Augustine – “restlessness of the human heart until it finds rest God” • OT – family • NT – church • “community that focuses on fellowship with the creator.”

  10. Genesis 3 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves… To the woman he said,        "I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing;        with pain you will give birth to children.        Your desire will be for your husband,        and he will rule over you."

  11. Genesis 3 • Hiding from God and each other • Sexuality – image-bearers and broken • Are we comfortable in our own skin?

  12. The end of the Story: • Mt 22:23-30 At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. • Still sexual beings – but no marriage or genital sexuality. • “Sex pales in comparison to the heavenly marriage in which we will be fully one with the God who created and redeemed us in Christ. This does not minimize the joy, goodness and worth of physical intimacy, but reminds us that it is a sign of even greater thing to come.” The Meaning of Sex – Dennis Hollinger.

  13. Summary: • Sexuality is part of our being made in the image of God – maleness and femaleness. • It is a drive to connect / to bond with others. • It can express itself in physical genital sexual relationship, as an expression of bonding. • People can be fully sexually alive and fulfilled, without a genital sexual relationship. • Genital sexuality will no longer be needed or relevant in the “age to come”.

  14. Application: • What story have you been listening to? How can we listen to God’s story about sexuality? • To reflect on our sexuality – this driving force to bond with other human beings. Are we more aware of our sexual desire or our desire for sex? • Are we comfortable in our own skins? Are we comfortable with our maleness? Or femaleness?

  15. Reflection verse: So God created man in his own image,        in the image of God he created him;        male and female he created them. Gen 1:27
