Factors influencing climate: Ocean Currents

Learn about the two main factors that determine climate and the significant role ocean currents play in distributing heat, nutrients, and influencing climate patterns. Discover how continents, wind, and the Earth's rotation drive the flow of these currents and contribute to climate and vegetation variations.

  1. Do Now 9/23: Be prepared to answer this question out loud... What are the 2 main factors that determine climate?

  2. Ocean Currents Ocean currents influence climate by distributing heat from place to place and mixing and distributing nutrients.

  3. Ocean Currents • Oceans absorb heat from the air circulation patterns • This heat and differences in water density create warm and cold currents. • Continents affect flow and cause currents to flow clockwise in the northern hemisphere and counter-clockwise in the southern hemisphere

  4. Ocean Currents Cont’d • Driven by winds and the earth’s rotation, currents help redistribute heat and influence climate and vegetation • (especially near costal areas) • Mix ocean waters and distribute nutrients and dissolve oxygen
