  1. Bellbrae PS BYOD PROGRAM 2019 Making it a success together.

  2. SCHOOL DIRECTION Our school has embraced a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) approach for enriching the learning of students and teachers. Electronic devices are used to promote genuine learning, research, problem solving, organisation, positive communication and responsible digital citizenship.

  3. ADVANTAGES OF BYOD The advantage of a BYOD program is that it enables students to personalise their learning and adapt technology to suit their individual learning styles, rather than working with a device that has been prescribed for them and is a share school device. The technology is available to the student all day at school, so learning is not limited by availability of high demand school resources. Provides consistent and more up-to-date access to ICT, allowing students to view and use educational apps, online research and digital learning apps. Seamless integration between home and school, leading to more consistent application to learning.

  4. ADVANTAGES OF BYOD Research suggests that when students have ownership of their devices, engagement in the learning increases, ICT skills improve and students become more versatile in the way they demonstrate their learning outcomes for now and in the future. It is vital that students have the capacity to learn with technology. It allows all teachers and students to have access to world-class digital content with which to create, communicate and collaborate locally and globally.

  5. BENEFITS OF BYOD Highly reliable/ device available all the time for “just now” learning opportunities Long battery life ( 7+ hours - all day device) Reliable infrastructure (Upgraded Wi-Fi ) Same problems - same solutions. Students/Staff can often solve their own problems Technology (allows students to show their work from their device onto the classroom interactive smartboard or TV)

  6. WHY YEARS 4/5/6? Just in time learning’ (immediate source of information for answers and solving problems) New technology allows students to show what they are learning and working on / project learning onto the classroom interactive TV/ Smartboard and collaborate/ receive feedback Learning continuity is enhanced by providing full access to learning programs at school and at home (Google Classrooms/Drive) Research and publishing in all curriculum areas Preparing students for secondary school where the same or similar devices are used

  7. DEVICE REQUIREMENTS iPad should be at least 32GB (can no longer get any lower than this anyway.) iPad Mini is not recommended (this is because it is not supported by Naplan online test) RECOMMENDED 32GB 5th GEN (2017) or 6th GEN (2018) 9.7 inch iPad.

  8. BEST PURCHASING OPTIONS Office Works iPad 6th Gen 2018 32GB 9.7 inches $457.00 BIG W iPad 6th Gen 2018 32GB 9.7 inches $459.00 JB HIFI iPad 6th Gen 2018 32GB 9.7 inches $469.00

  9. SAFETY Internet is filtered by DET Teachers / Parents / Techs have 100% access Parents co-managers and OWNERS of device Passcodes / passwords to be stored by parents Constantly refining to improve safe access for all students

  10. USER AGREEMENT ACCEPTABLE USE AGREEMENT: Year 4-6 students are invited to be part of the BYOD program. All students and a parent/carer are required to read, understand and sign the Acceptable Use Agreement at the commencement of each school year. This governs the requirements and expectations under which students use a device and access the network and internet whilst at school. This is a standard expectation from Bellbrae Primary School and the Department of Education and Training (DET).

  11. Device Options • I consent for my child’s device to be used and stored at school only. I acknowledge that my child will be unable to bring their device home. • I consent for my child to bring their device home at the completion of each day. • I consent for my child’s device to be stored at school during the week and stored at home of a weekend.

  12. EXPECTATIONS - DEVICE STORED AT SCHOOL Device will be placed in the secure cabinet at the completion of each school day Device will only be accessed at the discretion of the teacher no earlier than 9:00 am each day If the device is used inappropriately it will be returned to the secure cabinet at the teachers discretion

  13. EXPECTATIONS - DEVICE STORED AT HOME Fully charged each day Comes to school each day Co-managed by adult Available to teachers / techs and parents at all times All content is school appropriate Will not be used for every lesson Never used before and after school (including bus stops)

  14. HOME GUIDELINES - EXAMPLE Storage: Kitchen bench for charging. Time limit: 30 mins 4 times a week. Use: Homework / Mathletics / Reading Eggs. When: 4:30 – 5:00 pm Where: Kitchen table only. Understandings: -I ask before using the iPad. -No device in bedroom -I earn my time by doing chores. -If I ask for more time, I lose time! -I NEVER use the app store without a parent. -I NEVER communicate with anyone without a parent. -If something makes me feel uncomfortable, I tell an adult straight away. -I will SHOW MY SCREEN at all times. -iPad use is a privilege, NOT a right!

  16. COMMON QUESTIONS RELIANCE ON THE DEVICE? Devices are only used when they are needed. This might be some research for inquiry, to type up a text or to record a video reflection. Students are not on their devices all day. Some days they will use the devices more than others, some days they may not use them at all. It depends on the learning they are doing. SECURITY / DAMAGE / LOSS? We have had very few incidents regarding devices security / damage / loss and all of them have been resolved promptly. REPLACING TRADITIONAL LEARNING METHODS? Not at all. We have worked really hard and are very proud of our teaching and learning program. The devices are a tool to complement and extend our current approach. We must support students to develop skills, but that will not be at the expense of handwriting, reading books etc. BENEFITS OF 1:1 OVER CLASS SET? Students having a 1:1 device means they have immediate access to information as required. It also means that students do not have to wait to a particular time of week to access a shared laptop. This means less delays in getting work complete. ARE THEY DISTRACTING? Initially, the novelty of having a device is very exciting and kids constantly ask when will we use our iPads? This quickly shifts as they realise that very little has changed in their classroom, rather certain learning experiences are incorporated to use the iPad to enhance the learning.
