  17. Website Usability Studies Why? • Website design has evolved; best practices • Culture of assessment

  18. Usability Studies Stakes are higher: Users FEEL as though they have easier, better alternatives • Federated searching as an answer • “Google” of library resources • General or discipline specific • SCOPUS as an STM federated search tool

  19. ZOOM is the ULS federated searching tool • This online library search engine allows users to simultaneously search any combination of the databases, electronic journals, PITTCat, and other online resources offered by the University Library System (ULS).

  20. How does Zoom! make research easier?Zoom! offers a quick find feature that enables users to enter a search from the library's homepage, without having to select any database at all. This search defaults to searching our our five largest databases. Users can also elect to include a search of PITTCat in this search. In most cases, users will get  items relevant to their topic.

  21. Search ZOOM • Available from the front page of the ULS webpage • http://www.library.pitt.edu

  22. The HelpHub is a ULS program that offers reference services to students at several locations around campus in the evenings. • HelpHub locations are staffed by trained library school interns and are located in convenient areas across campus. • We assist users with library questions, research assignments, accessing library resources via the Web and finding any information that they may need from study places beyond the library.

  23. Online Archives PhilSci Archive http://philsci-archive.pitt.edu/ An electronic archive for preprints in the philosophy of science. It is offered as a free service to the philosophy of science community. The goal of the Archive is to promote communication in the field by the rapid dissemination of new work. Archive of European Integration (AEI)http://aei.pitt.edu The AEI is an electronic repository and archive for research materials on the topic of European integration and unification. The AEI collects two types of materials: certain types of independently-produced research materials and official European Community/European Union documents.

  24. Electronic Theses/Dissertations • Pilot project for 2003-04 • Uses E-print software (like PhilSci Archive) • Mounted within the digital library of the ULS • Approximately 400 theses and dissertations loaded in pdf format • Searchable in PITTcat and Google, etc.

  25. Pittsburgh Digital Image Collection Largely funded by a 2002 National Leadership Grant by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, this is a two year collaborative project involving the ULS Archives Service Center, the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania and the Carnegie Museum of Art to create a single Web gateway to nationally significant collections of visual images of the Pittsburgh region.
