  3. Sectionalism The intense feelings of sectionalism further divided the country into two separate sections- North and South. North South

  4. Sectionalism Prior to the Civil War, the United States was not really united. 1. Our country was more like two separate countries sharing the same land. North South

  5. Sectionalism 2. The North was industry based, large cities, a diverse population, and favored the politics of the Republican party which supported the abolition of slavery.

  6. Sectionalism 3. Southerners were slavery based, and especially loyal to their section. They thought of themselves... a.) citizens of their own state first, b.) Southerners second, c.) U.S. citizens third. Planation focus Slavery based

  7. States’ Rights States’ rights is the idea that each state had the right to determine whether or not to follow federal laws. United States Law

  8. States’ Rights 1.Southerners supported states’ rights. They believed that they had the right to own slaves and even secede, or leave the Union, if they desired. United States Law

  9. States’ Rights 2. Northerners did notsupport states’ rights. They believed the national government had final power. United States Law

  10. States’ Rights 3. Southerners believed they had the right to leave the Union (secession) if Tariffs are added onto goods. Tariffs: Taxes on imported goods.

Issues that Divided the Nation • An important issue separating the country related to the power of the FEDERAL government. 2) Southerners felt that they had the power to declare any national law ILLEGAL. Northerners believed that the national government’s power was SUPREME over that of the states. 3) Southerners felt that the abolition of SLAVERY would destroy their region’s economy. Northerners believed that slavery should be abolished for MORAL reasons.
