You will investigate public services, exploring the variety of organisational roles and responsibilities and accountabilities to the public, and to others. You will also explore the range of different job opportunities within the services, investigating the kind of work that public services employees do on a day-to-day basis. 8. BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Public Services Introduction Activity... In the UK our Public Services are grouped into 3 categories. In pairs see if you can work out these 3 categories.

  9. 3 Categories of Public Services • Emergency Services: • The police; fire; ambulance • The Armed Forces: • Army; Royal Navy; Royal Marines; Royal Air Force • Other Uniformed Services: • The Prison Service; UK Border Agency; HM Revenue & Customs; Coast Guard

  10. The Categories of Uniformed Public Services Look at the services listed below and identify what category of service they are: • Fire & Rescue Service • Coast Guard • NHS Nursing • Military Police • Police • PCSO • Prison Service • Military • Army • Royal Air Force • Royal Navy • HM Customs & Excise • Ambulance

  11. Research Task: PCSOs Police, Community Support Officers You need to produce a fact sheet on PCSO’s. You will need to research this public service to find the information needed to complete the questions below. A good place to start is the PCSO website: http://www.policecommunitysupportofficer.com/welcome.html or http://www.police-recruitment.co.uk/pcso_recruitment.html You need to explore the website to find the following information: • Their Purpose – why do they exist and what are they trying to achieve? • Their Roles – what duties / activities do they do on a day to day basis? • What powers do they have? • What equipment do they carry? • What are the requirements to become a PCSO? • How do you apply to be an PCSO? • What training is given to PCSOs? • What career opportunities are there for PCSO officers Once you have found all of this information you need to produce a fact sheet. You should also collect images and keep a record of all the websites you use.

  12. Unit 2: Employment...Assignment 1: Careers Advice Scenario • You belong to an organisation which runs a careers advisory service for people in their last year of secondary school. You constantly get complaints from careers teachers in schools, and young people who come into your office, that there is not enough information available on careers in the uniformed public services. Your department has been asked to produce an information pack that will outline the roles, purposes and responsibilities of two contrasting services. Task 1: Purpose, Roles and Responsibilities Part a) • You have been asked to produce an information pack for two contrasting services; within this pack you must detail the purpose, roles and responsibilities of each service. You are required to gather information on how these topics relate to your two chosen uniformed public services, print it off and keep a copy. • Purposes: • Organisational objectives • Mission statements • Legalisation (i.e. Fire Service Act1997/2002, Police Act 2004) • Roles: • Dealing with accidents and emergencies • Routine work • Peace-keeping activities • Other roles (anti-terrorist and anti-smuggling roles) • Defence roles • Humanitarian work • Disaster relief • Conflict • Working in prisons • Transporting prisoners • Patrolling coast • Operating CCTV • Working in local communities Responsibilities: • Accountability – (legal, professional and political) • Performance indicators – (what they are, examples of, effect on work) • Response to change • Diversity • Responsibility to the public – (Value for money, spending tax payers money wisely) We are going to start by looked at the police. You will then chose another ‘contrasting service’ to compare them to.
