Middle Ages- a period that lasted from about 500 to about 1500. Called the middle ages because it falls between ancient and modern times. Medieval- Latin word for “middle age” The spread of Christianity into Northern Europe was largely through the efforts of missionaries and monks.

  1. Middle Ages- a period that lasted from about 500 to about 1500. Called the middle ages because it falls between ancient and modern times. Medieval- Latin word for “middle age” The spread of Christianity into Northern Europe was largely through the efforts of missionaries and monks.

  2. Missionaries- people who try to convert others to a particular religion. Monks- religious men who lived apart from society in isolated communities. Monasteries- communities of monks built all over Europe in the Middle Ages.

  3.   5. Charlemagne- brilliant warrior and strong king who led the Franks in building a huge empire. He also built schools across Europe, which provided some of the greatest religious scholars of the Middle Ages. Teachings helped shape religious and social life in Europe for centuries.
