  2. I. Rough Rider Becomes President A. TR begins the “Square Deal”, a plan to protect the “common man” from big business 1. Four Focuses: a. Sound (safe) money b. expansion c. protection d. prosperity

  3. II. Square Deal: Trust Busting A. TR challenges BAD trusts 1. files 44 lawsuits against companies that used trusts 2. Sup. Co. rules trusts must be broken up 3. Roosevelt gives ICC power to file lawsuits against RRs that had monopolies III. Square Deal: Protecting Labor & Unions A. Coal miners in PA strike for fair pay, mine co. won’t give in 1. TR threatens gov’t takeover of mines if strike doesn’t end B. Strike ends when mine owners decide  to give workers higher pay & shorter work day

  4. IV. Square Deal: Health & Environment Reform A. Upton Sinclair’s ”The Jungle”, encourages TR to push for the passage of the Meat Inspection Act (1906) 1. Federal inspection of meat B. Roosevelt pushes for Pure Food & Drug Act (1906) 1. inspection of foods, stops sale of contaminated foods 2. Medicines require truthful labels for FDA approval C. After camping with conservationist John Muir, TR creates National Park System (protects 100s of thousand of acres)
