  1. Jolly Phonics

  2. Jolly Phonics • An early systemic phonics program • First developed in Britain • In use for 20 years • _______________ • Modified for North American market

  3. Learning the Letter Sounds • 42 main sounds (phonemes) • 7 groups of six sounds each

  4. Multisensory approach • Each sound has an action • Child experiences each sound in four ways • s Weave hand in an s shape, like a snake, and say ssssss • a Wiggle fingers above elbow as if ants crawling on you and say a, a, a. • tTurn head from side to side as if watching tennis and say t, t,

  5. Letters not introduced in alphabetical order First group of letters chosen because CVC word = ______________________________________ (bug, dad, cat, pet, hot) s a t i p n First group of letters

  6. b then d • b and d are introduced separately • Very similar sounds so too confusing to do together • Children must practice listening for sounds to develop the ability to ____________________________________

  7. Some sounds can be written more than 1 way Introduced one way, then other ways taught later Example First (ai) as in rain Then later (a-e) gate And still later ay (day) Same sounds, different times

  8. Five Basic Skills • Learn the 42 letter sounds • Learn the letter formations (how to make the letter) • Blending the sounds ( c a t = cat • Identifying the sounds in words (for writing) • Tricky words = ___________________________ All five skills are taught at the same time, not one after another

  9. Learning Letter Formation • Stress holding pencil in tripod position • Correct formation of each letter (in finger phonics book) • Easier to start off right than correct later

  10. Blending • Diagraphs • Taught as one sound ( sh, wh, ch, th, ng) • Two consonants together that make 1 sound • Blend • Taught as two sounds (pl, dr, st, cl) • Original two sounds can still be heard

  11. Tricky Words • Term used to describe to children all irregularly spelled words

  12. Multisensory Approch • Uses 4 different approaches which aids learning and remembering • --------------------- (seeing) • --------------------- (hearing) • ---------------------(movement) • ---------------------(touch sensation)

  13. Each sound has an action • By doing an action for each letter sound children are using body movement, ears, eyes and speech to help them remember • Much more concrete than abstract idea of a sound (think Piaget)

  14. Many parts to the package • Wall murals with letters and pictures that children can consult

  15. And • Videos that children can watch • Each group of letters has a small section which emphasizes that sound in many ways

  16. And • Workbooks that include • Letters to trace • Letters to print • Pictures to colour • Sample words with the letter • How to make the letter • Picture of how to make the letter

  17. Plus • Books with stories using the letters and indented letters to feel • Stencils for tracing words with each letter and related picture • Puzzles (called Jiglets) of letter pictures) • Teacher’s manual with information and many reproducible worksheets.

  18. Parent Involvement • Parents given information package on program • Sound book sent home each night with day’s new letter so parents can reinforce.

  19. Finally • Only one of many commercial phonics programs available • Widely used in Ontario • Popular because of good quality resource material • Actions with sounds particularly liked by children ***
